The Magic Spells in Death's Door aren't only useful in solving puzzles and getting through the game's most challenging platforming sections, but they can also be very handy in combat. These spells can do substantial damage to enemies from afar, and utilizing a perfect balance between ranged combat and melee combat in this game is one of the best approaches to do.

While the Magic Spells are already efficient as soon as the player acquires them, what many don't know when playing the game is that the spells can be upgraded. There are only four Magic Spells in Death's Door, and that's more than enough for this little indie darling. If the player wants to be as powerful as they can in this game, they will want to upgrade all four Magic Spells. Here is the way to do that.

Defeating The Bosses That Guard The Upgrades

Before proceeding, one thing the player should know and expect is that acquiring the upgrades for spells requires defeating a boss. The bosses, however, are very similar in design and move sets, with their only differences being the main spell they use. These bosses are slow and predictable but the player should still approach them carefully. Here are the attacks common to all of them the player should watch out for:

  • Downward Slash:  The boss will lift their weapon in the air and smash it on the ground. Occasionally, this is quickly followed by a horizontal swipe, so the player should wait for both attacks to finish before striking the boss with their weapon.
  • Forward Thrust: When the boss places their weapon on their side, with the tip pointing in front of them, this is a wind-up for their Forward Thrust attack. This one can be avoided easily by dodging or just walking to the boss's off-hand.
  • Leaping Attack: The boss leaps towards the player. Easily avoidable by simply dodging away.
  • Magic Lock: Every so often, the player's movement will get hindered, indicated by a circular icon at the player's feet. This can be broken free by mashing the attack button.

Aside from those attacks, the bosses will also use their respective spells, all of which are slowly moving and easily avoided. The bosses' main strengths are their vitality, so these encounters are more of a battle of endurance. Once a boss is defeated, the player will earn the Spell upgrade.

Upgrading The Bow And Arrow

The Bow and Arrow is the game's starting spell, meaning the player immediately has this equipped at the beginning of the game. This spell is useful in hitting gate switches that are normally out of reach. They can also be used to damage enemies at a distance during combat encounters, especially those that explode when attacked.

Upgrade Location

To get to the Bow and Arrow upgrade, the player must already have the Hookshot spell. This one is in the Lost Cemetary. From the door, take the first entrance that's directly below the crow. Upon entering, the player will be greeted with an opening that's blocked by webs. Simply shoot it with a fireball to get it of it. Take the drop and continue down the path. Destroy any obstacles and enemies down the path.

Take the ladder north of the coffins and light the brazier atop the platform using the fireball spell. This will open a gate that leads to a room where multiple enemies will spawn. Defeat the enemies to reach the unlit brazier. Light it to continue forward.

The next room contains two unlit firepits. Light them in quick succession using the bomb and the hookshot to proceed to the next room. The next room contains the portal that leads to a boss. Defeating the boss will grant the player the upgrade for the Bow and Arrow.

Upgrading The Fireball

The Fireball spell is the second the player will receive as they progress through the game. For puzzle-solving and exploration, this lights up unlit braziers and firepits without the need for other fire sources. It can also be used to damage enemies in combat.

Upgrade Location

The upgrade for the Fireball is in the Lost Cemetary. From the door, take the path that leads to the Stranded Sailor. However, instead of entering the cave that leads to the aforementioned level, head to the right instead and pass through the archway to drop down.

Continue heading east, and then take the stairs above the firepit. Continue on the path and climb the first ladder. Proceed left and enter the structure. Once inside, continue forward, and then head left once in the room with the three tombs. Eliminate the webs blocking the left path to continue forward. The portal to the boss is in the next room.

Upgrading The Bomb

The Bomb spell is a powerful and useful ability that will destroy breakable obstacles. It also deals considerable damage in combat and has a small-scale area of effect, but it consumes two Magic Crystals, the most one spell needs in the game.

Upgrade Location

The Bomb spell upgrade is still in the Lost Cemetary. As a starting point, the player should head to the cliff where the Old Crow awaits. From there, take the path to the right and continue moving forward until they reach the bridge next to the brazier.

Once on the bridge, spot the unfenced section to drop down. Just beneath the entry point of the bridge is a breakable wall. Destroy the obstacle with the bomb spell to enter. The portal to the boss awaits inside.

Upgrading The Hookshot

The Hookshot is the last spell the player will get in the game. It can be used to latch on to crosses to reach previously unreachable gaps. It can also be used on enemies to quickly close distances. However, its best feature is that it doesn't consume any Magic Crystals at all. The player can perform this spell to their heart's extent without worrying about running out of Crystals.

Upgrade Location

The upgrade for the Hookshot spell is located in the mini area that connects the Lost Cemetary and the Stranded Sailor. From the Hall of Doors, take the door to the Stranded Sailor and take the path back to the Cemetary. At the bottom of the first flight of stairs, use the Hookshot on the cross across the water on the right. There's a lever the player should flip here, opening the locked gate across their position. Once opened, enter the previously-barred section to find the portal that leads to the boss.
