The upcoming Deathloop will see protagonist Colt imprisoned in a time loop on the island of Blackreef, seeking to end his punishment. While the player will be tasked with hunting down eight targets around the loop, they will also be chased by another player character named Julianna. As a killer assassin, her only goal is to stop Colt at all costs. Deathloop introduces an innovative player dynamic, and will be further improved by the player's choice of Trinkets to customize the character's weapons and abilities. The player can assign them and provide a special buff for each loop.

The Trinkets are little pieces of metal that are inscribed with the AEON logo, and hold special powers like the anomaly that keeps Colt on Blackreef. At a recent fan convention, one of the Deathloop team members described the Trinkets as being able to change the properties of their weapons and the character. In this way, the players will be altering the reality on the island by increasing how fast they run or giving themselves health when they take out an enemy. This will add a new threat to Colt's endeavor to hunt down the eight visionaries, as he'll never know what kind of buffs Julianna will be using against him.

Possible Trinket Abilities

Deathloop-colt-questions

There are many comparisons to be drawn between Deathloop and the Dishonored series, and it seems another is that these Trinkets will serve a similar purpose to bone charms. The bone charms have special effects on the character's abilities and the Trinkets seem to have a similar effect in Deathloop. Some examples of bone charms include the ability to recover from falls faster, increasing swim speed, and grenades dealing more damage. This can give a pretty good starting point when considering what kind of buffs the Trinkets will offer.

For instance, one bone charm in Dishonored increases the amount of time that the player can possess an enemy. The same buff could be applied to Julianna as she takes on the disguise of one of the regular NPCs. The charms meant to increase the time that someone can be kept in the air or the rate of fire of the gun would certainly give Colt a buff to compete. As long as the improvements on each character aren't too overpowering when fighting the other, this will add a unique element to the gameplay.

Multiplayer Effects

Deathloop Colt Assassin

Deathloop will likely limit how many Trinkets and other buffs that characters can have active at one time. Otherwise it seems like they would run the risk of being overpowered when encountering players new to the loop. Hopefully there are other measures to prevent this as well, as there would be nothing worse than hopping into a Deathloop match where a Colt has to play against a Julianna who has beaten the game already. Seeing as how some gamers are quick to give into their worse nature, this feels like a system that needs to be balanced in order to create a worthwhile multiplayer experience.

The upcoming multiplayer assassination title Deathloop will put two players against each other on the mysterious Blackreef island. To help improve and change up the gameplay, these trinkets will likely make abilities last longer and increase the damage output of the weapons. While an important part of gameplay, it appears that Trinkets will only be part of the buff system in Deathloop. There seems to be an emphasis on players customizing their gameplay as they try to escape or hunt their target. It won't be long before Colt and Julianna have to battle it out, as Deathloop and the Trinkets will be released later this year.

Deathloop is launching September 14 for PC and PlayStation 5.
