The new Death Stranding trailer that aired at The Game Awards 2017 this week was full of impressive, noteworthy moments. One scene that stood out especially was when Norman Reedus' character finds himself underwater, watching the debris and detritus from the explosion float around him.

This scene from the trailer was far more than just another teasing section of Death Stranding's story and themes. Speaking to famed game developer Mark Cerny at PlayStation Experience, Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima confirmed that this underwater scene will be playable.

The actual gameplay objectives in this scene are unclear. Although viewers see Reedus' character shirtless and suspended in the water, the camera then cuts to his lifeless body (still wearing his uniform). This is followed by a grotesque look down Reedus' throat, only to see a fetus giving viewers a thumbs up. Fans are already digging into the trailer trying to come up with theories about what it all means and the fact that this will be playable will only give them added incentive to figure it all out.

In the same interview with Cerny, Kojima revealed that the latest Death Stranding trailer was recorded in real-time on a PS4 Pro. Trailers are generally given an extra level of polish or are created on the best hardware possible (usually a powerful PC), but this means that the Death Stranding trailer may be more representative of the full game. Kojima has already confirmed that the game will be in native 4K on PS4 Pro and fans will be glad to see that this is shaping up nicely.

Although the interview didn't offer many explanations on the intriguing game or its confusing trailer, Kojima's comments are giving fans extra reasons to be excited. It all suggests that Death Stranding's development is progressing as it's meant to. Kojima has set out some major ambitions for his game and has previously said that he is aiming for photorealistic graphics. These are the sort of goals that can hold up a game's development, but not in Death Stranding's case.

Unfortunately, it's still unclear when fans might be able to gain access to all of this. Everyone just wants to experience these impressive visuals (and weird gameplay) for themselves, but Kojima did not provide an update on the game's release date. However, we know that Kojima already has a Death Stranding release date in mind, so maybe news on that front will come sooner rather than later.

Death Stranding is currently in development for PS4.
