Hideo Kojima reveals that his upcoming PS4 game Death Stranding is not a horror game and that he will not be 'pursuing' a dark aspect to the game, despite what the trailers suggest.

Although Hideo Kojima is best-known for his work on the Metal Gear series, the veteran games developer has also shown a keen interest in the horror genre. At his former employee, Konami, Kojima was working on the (cancelled) Silent Hills P.T and he has also stated that he wants to make a VR horror game.

Understandably, many fans have suggested that Kojima's upcoming PS4 game, Death Stranding, would be big on horror as a result. However, in a new interview, the veteran game developer clarifies that the game isn't part of the horror genre.

Asked by Glixel about whether the 'darker' direction of his games is a result of 'the toll the past few years have taken' on him, Kojima says that "I don't have a dark mindset in particular." The developer explains that Death Stranding "is not a horror game" and he "just wanted to make something that looks very unique, something you haven't seen before, something with a more artistic slant to it." Kojima states that "I'm not pursuing a dark aspect to the game."

Fans intrigued by those Death Stranding trailers, and the way they seem to hint at a terrifying baby-snatching conspiracy and bizarre fleshy military forces (led by Death Stranding antagonist Mads Mikkelsen), will no doubt be disappointed. As Death Stranding features Norman Reedus and Guillermo del Toro, who both worked with Kojima on P.T, many would have also been hoping that the cancelled horror game would have influenced Death Stranding massively. No doubt, people would have been hoping for Death Stranding to be some kind of spiritual successor or evolution of the horror gameplay in the P.T demo, but unfortunately that's not the case.

In fact, not only will Death Stranding not be meddling with any horror game antics, but it's actually a completely new idea. Also in the interview, Kojima reveals that the game "wasn’t an idea that we'd had for a long time, it was really a new idea." Death Stranding was also the idea the team was "most enthusiastic about making" and would be "the best for the market." As it has been confirmed that Death Stranding will have photorealistic graphics and an open-world, it's easy to see how the game is market-friendly, and now fans are more eager than ever to see the mysterious game in action.

Death Stranding is currently in development for PS4.
