Death Stranding is the upcoming game by Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, who has since left Konami and formed his own studio. Now, ever since Kojima unveiled Death Stranding's first trailer at E3 several years ago, the game still remains to be a mystery to date. In a recent update, Kojima revealed that Death Stranding is now at a "critical phase" in the development process.

The update was posted in Japanese on Kojima's Twitter account revealing that Death Stranding has still not undergone the debugging and testing stages. Kojima also confirmed that he plays the game every day and decides on which elements stay and go. While Kojima Productions has made significant progress in the development, the creator revealed that sections of Death Stranding are still yet to be combined into one cohesive game.

Several days ago, a meeting between Kojima and several Sony games marketing executives ignited speculations on Death Stranding's release date. A Twitter photo posted by an executive at PlayStation revealed that people at Sony are excited to be working with Kojima for the next two weeks. The tweet has since sparked rumors that Sony and Kojima are going to announce the release date of Death Stranding soon.

While some may argue that they are probably just working on another preview, it is unlikely that too many people are involved in the creation of a trailer, especially since Death Stranding has quite a few of them already. Given that both Sony and Kojima are clearly working on something Death Stranding related, maybe an official update on the game, or even its release date, will be revealed on PlayStation's first-ever State of Play tomorrow, March 25th.

Up until now, players are still at a loss on what Death Stranding is all about. While Kojima has previously revealed that multiplayer will be a big part of the upcoming game, the developers haven't expanded on how the functionality will play out in Death Standing. However, last month, Kojima Productions filed two trademarks that seem to suggest how the multiplayer function will work in the game. The phrases that are up to be trademarked are "social strand system" and "strand games," which led some fans to believe that online multiplayer will be infused in the main campaign of the game rather than as a separate functionality.

Death Stranding is currently in development for PlayStation 4.
