There's no doubt that Death Stranding is one of the most highly anticipated releases in recent memory, despite the fact that the PlayStation exclusive from Kojima Productions has still yet to have its contents thoroughly explained to the public. For instance, it's still unclear as to exactly how the game will cater to single players, and how multiplayer gameplay will be a major component of the title. Speaking of multiplayer features, Death Stranding director Hideo Kojima recently teased some details that hinted at an emphasis of player connectivity.

At a recent Death Stranding panel held during the Tribeca Film Festival, Kojima explained that the key to understanding the link between the story and the game itself will be found in the theme of connection. What's more is that he stated the game hosts "a really new idea" regarding the way in which all players are connected in the title, which suggests how Death Stranding might exist as its own unique online multiplayer world.

Unfortunately, Kojima didn't provide an in-depth explanation on the matter, as he didn't want to make Death Stranding publisher Sony "unhappy" by divulging too many details before he had the go-ahead to do so. With this being the case, there's really no telling what kind of multiplayer features the PlayStation exclusive will contain, and just how it will be able to set itself apart from other titles insofar as its multiplayer elements are concerned.

"I also threw in a really new idea. You're connecting the game, and everyone is playing it together, and you'll be connected, everyone will be connected together as well. I can't say anything because Sony will be very unhappy. I don't want to be disconnected from Sony."

This isn't the first instance of Kojima teasing that Death Stranding's multiplayer will a never-before-seen experience, as the game's director has previously stated that the component will be "something different". As it so happens, a recent filing for Death Stranding trademarks intimates as much, with the terms “social strand system,” and “strand game” having been registered, leading fans to speculate multiplayer will be woven into the game in a unique manner all its own.

All things considered, it looks as if we're no closer to being able to fully grasp what Death Stranding could offer in relation to multiplayer, and even much less so when it comes to the game's story. That said, here's to hoping Kojima and his team shed a more illuminating light on the title in the near future.

Death Stranding is currently in development for PlayStation 4.
