Hideo Kojima's games have a reputation for having complicated, confusing stories, and many are expecting the same from his next title, Death Stranding. To get an idea of just how hard to follow the Death Stranding story will be, even one of the game's actors, Mads Mikkelsen, is struggling to fully understand the plot.

"[Hideo Kojima] was trying to tell me the full plot of the game. And it's so elaborate that I got lost, but I really wanted to learn more right then," said Mads Mikkelsen, who is playing a mysterious character in Death Stranding thought to be the game's primary antagonist. If Death Stranding's story is as elaborate as Mads Mikkelsen claims it is, then it should fit right in with Kojima's other work.

Skip to the 21 minute mark to see Mads Mikkelsen discuss his collaboration with Hideo Kojima and the plot of Death Stranding:

There's still a lot we don't know about Death Stranding's plot, but what we've seen of the game so far seems to support Mikkelsen's claim that the story is elaborate. It's really no surprise that he got lost trying to follow Death Stranding's story, as it's been difficult for fans to decipher exactly what is going on in the game based on the pair of trailers that have been released for it so far.

Take Death Stranding's E3 2016 trailer, for example. Serving as the game's announcement trailer, it shows a naked Norman Reedus on a beach with an infant attached to his gut. The infant then disappears into nothingness as mysterious, floating beings stare at Reedus from the ocean. Death Stranding's E3 2016 trailer is strange, and it explains next to nothing about the game.

Then there was the Death Stranding trailer that premiered at The Game Awards 2016, which actually starred Mikkelsen. In this trailer, horror film director Guillermo del Toro materializes an infant in a mechanical pod while running around in a war zone. Eventually, Mikkelsen and a squad of soldiers show up, preparing to attack del Toro using their supernatural powers.

With all this crazy stuff happening in the two Death Stranding trailers gamers have been treated to so far, it makes sense that the full plot is equally as off the wall. Mikkelsen's comments may make some fans fear that Death Stranding's story could be a little too complicated, but if anyone can pull off a ridiculously elaborate video game story, it's Hideo Kojima.

Death Stranding is in development for PS4.
