Death Stranding 2 is laying the groundwork to bring back several of the first game's characters. As of this writing, very little is known about the upcoming Kojima game nor who the main playable character will be. If one key character is playable, however, it could be a double-edged sword for Death Stranding 2.

One of the main supporting characters in the first game was a woman named Fragile. Throughout the game, she supported the game's protagonist Sam Porter in many different ways. The first trailer for Death Stranding 2 seemed to reveal that the two had, at the very least, renewed their professional relationship. The trailer and its focus on Fragile have led some to speculate that she might be a playable character in the upcoming game. If so, letting players use the character could work for and against the game.

The Unique Gameplay of Death Stranding

The first game was by far one of the most unique games to be released during its era. The principal gameplay of Death Stranding revolved around the player making deliveries across a blighted United States of America. While there was combat, the game actively discouraged and even punished players for engaging in it at times. It mostly just focused on having players find their way from point A to point B while trying to sneak around the game's monsters.

The biggest threat Sam Porter faced in Death Stranding was the BTs or Beached-Things. Early on in the game, players had no defense against them and had to sneak around and avoid them, which made for some of the game's most nerve-wracking experiences. As time went on, Sam was given new ways to fight against them which included the game's own version of stealth kills and active combat. Later on, the creatures would function as some of the game's key boss fights.

Why Making Fragile a Playable Character In Death Stranding 2 Is A Double-Edged Sword

While nothing has been confirmed on the gameplay end, some have speculated that Death Stranding 2 will expand upon Fragile's backstory. As such, it is possible that the character may be playable at some point in the upcoming video game. This possibility opens up many fun opportunities and new gameplay avenues. Fragile's main contribution to the first game was her ability to teleport which functioned as a fast travel device for the player. Using such an ability in the base game to teleport around the map could make for some fun gameplay opportunities and offer new ways to navigate challenges. The downside is that it may make Sam Porter a less appealing character to play as.

The key gameplay in Death Stranding involved finding creative ways to get the protagonist over a seemingly impassable mountain and other environmental obstacles. The problem with making Fragile a playable character is that it would cut out a lot of the challenge that comes from playing as Sam Porter. Players wouldn't have to think about how they're going to get down an incredibly steep mountain when they could just teleport to the bottom. Fragile would likely have some limit on how often she could do this but would remain a difficult balancing act.

In the end, it's impossible to say what Kojima Productions has planned for the upcoming game. It is clear that Death Stranding 2's gameplay will have certain challenges, depending on the direction it takes. Adding Fragile as a playable character could easily become one of those challenges. Only time will tell how Kojima Productions will handle it if this is the direction they opt to go.

Death Stranding 2 is currently in development for PS5.
