Death Stranding 2 has been revealed, and though it has gotten a four-minute trailer, it is still a bit unclear what the sequel will be like. Higgs’ involvement seems to suggest combat will have a role to play, and Sam leaving the UCA means that deliveries could take a back seat. With the cast list being smaller, a new setting being highlighted, and Hideo Kojima himself suggesting big changes, fans could be in for a hugely different sequel. However, BTs will likely return.

The otherworldly Beached Things are one of the most unique aspects of Death Stranding’s world, and though it is unclear if Amelie holding back the next extinction has led to them fading away, it would be surprising if they did. Dodging and occasionally fighting BTs was a key aspect of the first game’s gameplay loop, as sneaking by the creatures was as intense as it gets. Though BTs can be expected for Death Stranding 2, players may also be in store for some even scarier interactions with them.

The Lack of a BB Will Make BTs Harder To Keep Track Of

Those that finished the original Death Stranding will know that Sam Bridges has lost his BB, as little Lou has been removed from her pod and will now grow up as a normal child. Though Lou’s removal from her pod is a powerful moment that highlights the connection between Sam and his daughter, and serves as a terrific endpoint for the first game, fans have been questioning what the impact of this scene will be for years now. Not only have players wondered whether the sequel will see Sam providing for Lou, but they have pondered how detecting BTs will work.

Though Sam has DOOMs and the ability to repatriate, which essentially guarantees that he can never die, his DOOMs are low level, so he can only slightly detect BTs without a Bridge Baby. With this in mind, BTs could be almost entirely invisible in the next game. As a result, Death Stranding 2’s BT encounters could resemble the cave section where Fragile and Sam first meet, with players having a much harder time dealing with Beached Things as a result.

Though new equipment could be introduced to help find and combat the BTs - which could have been created in the years that passed since Sam grew old - players could still be in store for some truly scary BT sequences. However, BTs being hard to detect is just part of the problem, as it can be assumed that there will also be some new BTs scattered throughout Death Stranding 2’s changed setting. If additional BT types are introduced to the mix, then players could have some previously unseen threats to deal with that make traversal even more difficult.

Underwater Exploration Could Make For Some Horrifying BTs

Not only can some fresh BT types be lurking throughout DS2’s desert, but the game’s ocean codename and the ship featured near the end of the reveal trailer suggest that underwater exploration is also planned. With a squid BB hallucination and underwater-themed toys shown in Lou’s room, exploring below the tar-filled oceans seems to be part of Kojima's plan. If this happens, then players will likely be in for some BTs themed around sea creatures.

Not only were underwater BTs teased during the rebirth sequences from the first game, but players have already fought large BT squids on land. In the sequel, these squids could be on their home turf, speeding after Sam through some water. Even bigger and scarier BTs could be introduced that dwarf Sam, like sharks and whales. For players with a fear of open water in video games, Death Stranding 2 has the potential to be terrifying, especially if BTs follow players below the waves.

Death Stranding 2 is currently in development for PS5.
