Jump Festa's concluded its online presentation just recently, where it featured a wide array of Manga and Anime news. For those unfamiliar, Jump Festa is an annual expo in Japan all about Manga and Anime and hosted by Shueisha, which produces the famous Jump line of manga magazines. The event was held online this year due to the ongoing pandemic, but that didn't stop the expo from making some exciting announcements.
One of those announcements was a new anime series based on Platinum End, a manga by Takeshi Obata and Tsugumi Ohba, who were also responsible for popular manga like Death Note and Bakuman. Platinum End premiered in Sheuisha's Jump SQ magazine, back in 2015, and has been simultaneously released in English digitally since. The 12th volume of the manga is planned to get a print release on January 5th of 2021.
The plot is rather dark: Mirai Kakehashi is a middle school graduate who has spent his life under the abusive care of his aunt and uncle. Fed up with the abuse, Mirai attempts to commit suicide, but is saved by a guardian angle named Nasse. Using the powers bestowed on him, he confronts his aunt and uncle and enacts justice. Soon after, however, he learns that God is planning to retire, and he must participate in a competition to decide who will become the next God of the world.
At Jump Festa, it was revealed that the manga would be getting an official anime adaptation to be aired on the Tokyo Broadcasting System in fall of 2021. Hideya Takahashi is set to direct the adaptation, and has directed other shows in the past like Strike Witches: Road to Berlin and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind. The studio behind the anime is Signal.MD, which works on both TV Series and films.
As for the teaser, there's not much to say about it. It features the announcement along with some concept art for the show, including some sketches of the characters. It's a very stylish trailer but it doesn't showcase much that the target audience doesn't already know about. It's a nice announcement piece, but it seems that the project isn't ready to show anything too extravagant at the time of writing.
Regardless, given the pedigree of the original creators and the impressive concept art, the anime looks set to be yet another solid adaptation of a quality manga. Whether it lives up to something like Death Note is a much higher bar to clear, but here's hoping the show is everything that fans love about the original and more.
The Platinum End anime will premiere on the Tokyo Broadcasting System in 2021.
