Wade Wilson’s Deadpool is a beloved character for how unconventional, lewd, and rambunctious he is, especially when compared to a pantheon of Marvel characters that is more traditionally rigid in terms of how atypical or irreverent they can be. Deadpool is a satire in and of himself, originally of Slade Wilson’s Deathstroke from DC. This gives Deadpool the leisure of misbehaving at any given moment, taking digs at other Marvel properties or characters through blatant fourth-wall breaks, and being cartoonishly graphic in combat.

In terms of video game depictions of Deadpool, High Moon and Activision’s action game starring the mutant is a wonderful portrayal of that. Deadpool released in 2013 with praise for its humorous take on the character, though its gameplay was resoundingly less preferable as it became tedious and repetitive. Indeed, there is not much depth to Deadpool’s actual moment-to-moment gameplay, but Deadpool’s hilarious storytelling is easily its zenith, and surely deserves its own structural, current-gen remake treatment.

High Moon’s Deadpool is the Definitive Game About the Merc with a Mouth

Deadpool’s story premise is centered around his wanting to create and star in his own video game. Deadpool’s opening level in the Merc with a Mouth’s apartment is one of the most memorable sequences in any superhero action game, and certainly one of the few that perfectly encapsulates everything fans need to know or understand about the character.

Many interactions, such as watching TV, eating pizza, taking a nap, phoning Nolan North, or cooking hundreds of pancakes are most gratifying the longer players wait before exiting them, as dialogue will continue to exhaust as players sit idly. Nolan North is absolutely essential to Deadpool’s genetic makeup and should be inseparable from the IP if it is remade or continued in a spiritual sequel.

Deadpool has three personalities conversing with one another and comic book speech bubbles to represent the ones in his head, conveying as many quips and sarcastic jabs per minute as possible. It is these interaction prompts that are the most engaging and satisfying, making its action-shooter gameplay tiresome and banal in comparison to how unhinged or nonsensical interactions can become, such as being able to slap Wolverine until the player chooses to stop.

Songs sung by Deadpool sometimes appear in the background to highlight certain moments, and many Marvel characters are interacted with from Cable, Domino, Arclight, and many more who are also exciting to see interactions. In a remake, the story could be exactly the same with improved visuals for current gen. If Deadpool was instead given a spiritual sequel, the story could be anything imaginable as long as it perpetuates the same degree of adoration and love that High Moon put into the character for Deadpool.

Deadpool Could Improve its Gameplay in a Current-Gen Remake

Deadpool

However, it is when players agree to finally leave Sunset Apartments that the game suddenly becomes oddly familiar and far more uninteresting. Deadpool’s most critiqued feature is its actual gameplay and combat, and for good reason.

Deadpool is ultimately a basic action-shooter with repetitive enemy encounters outside its more authentic and hysterical interactions, making the moments between character dialogue more of a slog. If a remake was ever considered, whether it was under High Moon or another developer, Deadpool should have its regular gameplay and combat reworked and overhauled in order to make it as slapstick and belligerent as possible.

One of the benefits of Deadpool’s character besides how vulgar he can be is how he can manifest anything from anywhere and does not have to abide by any metaphysical rules. Therefore, Deadpool could introduce new weapons that are even more bombastic and zany than the Beauroyre blades, sais, and hammers. Plus, there should be even more of Deadpool's tasty chimichangas.

Bowling balls, inflatable carnival swords, or fictional weapons from other franchises, such as Iron Man's Proton Cannon, are all examples of creative weapons that should be considered. That way, even if combat is still rudimentary, it would at least be exciting based on the weapon diversity players could have.

Deadpool employed the character’s healing factor appropriately in terms of his suit and body receiving battle damage, but that could look even better in a current-gen remake’s graphical fidelity. No remake or spiritual sequel has been rumored, though in the midst of so many remakes lately, Deadpool should certainly be considered as a game that deserves one itself.
