Even if those who are running things have changed, it appears that the game has not changed with Deadpool 3. According to the writers of Deadpool 3, Ryan Reynolds' Merc with a Mouth will still be as R-rated as ever.

Many were worried that when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, and by extension the movie rights to Deadpool, that the franchise would lose its rated-R style with its inclusion into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Deadpool 3 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick said that while they were ecstatic that the merc with the mouth will potentially be involved in the MCU in the near future, Disney has apparently not held them back with what they can or cannot put on the screen for the next film

In a recent interview with Den of Geek, Reese said that fans can rest assured that Deadpool will still be the same character with no limitation whatsoever. “Don’t worry about that,” Reese said. “They’ve been very supportive with regard to that. Now when it comes to a particular joke, if we cross a line, maybe we’ll hear at some point, ‘Maybe not that joke.’ But I think they’ve been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing because obviously, we were doing it separate from them for a long time, and I think they’ve seen the success and they’ve had their own even greater success. So hopefully it’ll be a marriage made in heaven. But we’ve definitely got their support, and that’s a great thing to feel.”

Deadpool Posing Cropped

The two Deadpool movies have resonated as much as they have because, despite the character technically being a superhero, they are comedies first and superhero movies second. Even more so, they've brought surprisingly emotional depth to their movies that arguably can only be allowed because of their R-rating, and also because they are not restricted from being in a cinematic universe like other movies in the MCU are prone to be. In essence, they have their own story to tell.

It would be fun to see how Deadpool interacts with the other MCU characters while also not having him adhere to the MCU's story restrictions in that everyone's individual stories basically contribute to the overall larger universe. It harkens back to the old saying that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. It also may only continue the joke that Deadpool so conveniently only talks to the characters in his story because the studio won't allow him to talk to anyone else.

Of course, if the third cinematic installment with Deadpool doesn't live up to expectations, the MCU does give the character the opportunity to up his value again. That's how Spider-Man got some fanfare back. When the first two franchises starring the wallcrawler more or less failed, the MCU brought him in, which restored some lost faith in him. Even though fans would prefer that Deadpool be its own story more than anything else, it's never a bad idea to have a failsafe.

Deadpool 3 is in development at Marvel Studios.
