Deadpool 3 has an official release date of September 6, 2024, and was recently confirmed to be bringing back Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. This will be both Deadpool and Wolverine's first appearance as characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has many fans are excited to see what plans are in store for the two. Additionally, fans of the 2013 Deadpool game are crossing their fingers that the two X-Men's interactions will be similar to the iconic High Moon Studios game.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are well known for their long-standing friendship over the past few years, as well as their respective roles as Deadpool and Wolverine. They've constantly teased one another in a faux-feud ever since they met on the set of 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which may very well be able to translate seamlessly onto the big screen.

High Moon Studios Nails Deadpool and Wolverine's Relationship

Deadpool-Wolverine-2013-1

It's clear Deadpool is long overdue for a newer game following his mainstream rise to popularity, though the video game from 2013 stands the test of time in effectively exploring both Wade Wilson's personality and his dynamic with Wolverine. The opening scene perfectly embodies the relationship between the two after all, with Deadpool slumped lazily in an old armchair listening to his voicemails. Wolverine's message plays first saying, "Got your message, and for the last time no. You cannot take our Blackbird out for a joyride. Now stop calling about it!"

While the game sees him teaming up with members of the X-Men and Cable to take down Mister Sinister, his interactions with Wolverine are fairly brief, as much of the gameplay is the 'Merc with a Mouth' fighting solo. Still, the upcoming film could learn a thing or two from how High Moon Studios chose to represent the two's tumultuous relationship, with Wolverine exasperatedly trying to get Deadpool to pay attention to the mission as the latter rattles off jokes.

As expected from any game bearing the Deadpool title, there are plenty of fourth wall breaks, including in one scene in particular that many fans are hoping will be recreated or referenced somehow in Deadpool 3. After a montage where Deadpool crashes the X-Men's ship, the Blackbird, in Genosha, he's seen carrying Wolverine from the wreck. What happens afterward, however, is what truly makes the two's dynamic iconic, and Wolverine isn't even conscious during it. Players have the option to slap Wolverine to wake him up, which when done enough times can land them an in-game achievement. The one-liners that Wade says throughout are quite comedic and serve well to share how the red-clad mutant feels about the other.

The voice lines include, but are not limited to: "that's for never calling just to say 'Hi'," "that's for being in more comics than me," and "that's for never taking us to the prom." Perhaps the best one is simply, "that's because the player keeps mashing the button," which breaks the fourth wall in Deadpool's classic style. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's explainer video already masters this energy well, so it could be interesting to see that unfold in an MCU film.

Hugh Jackman has spent over a decade perfecting his portrayal of the iconic X-Men character, while Ryan Reynolds is seen as the real-life Deadpool for many fans. As such, seeing the two riff off one another may be a spectacle equal to, or perhaps better, than the interactions of the three Spider-Men in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Overall, the two actors seem quite excited about being together in a Deadpool 3 film, and their portrayal of Deadpool and Wolverine's dynamic has a lot of potential.

Deadpool 3 is set to release on September 6, 2024.
