Gamers visiting the Dead Space website today would notice that it has undergone some changes. Most notably, there is now a giant "2" in the Dead Space logo! EA and Visceral Games have officially announced Dead Space 2 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

The game will once again follow Isaac Clarke as he is now charged with containing the Necromorph's expansion into to space. According to the press release, Isaac will play a less passive role as now he's going to be calling the shots. There's no word on what this will mean for gameplay but I imagine it means some kind of squad based or co-op play may be in the works. Isaac will also have access to new weapons with which he will be able to dismember the hordes of alien mutants while Dead Space purists will be happy to hear about the return of his trusty Plasma Cutter. Fans of the Zero-G areas of the original game will be happy to hear that Zero-G is also making a return in the sequel.

Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer of Dead Space 2, confidently reassures fans that this sequel will be just as intense as the original.

“In Dead Space 2, not everything is exactly as it seems. Expect plot twists that will surprise you and a huge cast of twisted, disgusting monsters that are sure to scare the daylights out of you.”

No release date is mentioned in the press release, but hopefully a Fall 2010 release is not out of the question. What are you looking forward to most about the Dead Space 2 sequel?
