At the moment, horror fans are seemingly thrilled that a Dead Space remake is currently in the works. Given that the second game in the franchise, which came out in 2011, is considered to be one of the scariest games of the last ten years, it's hardly surprising that gamers who like the thrills of being terrified continue to return to the games. However, sometimes there are humorous elements that crop up every now and then, as one fan discovered.

Posting to Reddit, user u/noobish_hat seems to have noticed a minor detail on the back of the box art for Dead Space 2, the PS3 port specifically. Uploading a somewhat grainy image, the user made mention of the fact that the box contained two screenshots from the game, adding that EA must have decided that only one of the images would show the words "monkey pants."

It's not quite clear exactly what the phrasing refers to. It could be the developer's attempt to shoehorn in a bit of humor into a game that has one of the most gruesome opening scenes in horror history. Either that, or it could be referring to literal monkey pants, a style of trousers created in Japan which are military style in look and usually feature large pockets.

However, none of those are likely true. The most likely answer is that it's a reference to the former Dead Space art director, Ian Milham, which is his online Twitter handle. Milham is now a virtual production supervisor at George Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic studio. However it came about, the fact that, ten years on, people like u/noobish_hat are still discovering little details in the Dead Space series is testament to the community and perhaps the longevity of the franchise. It also shows that Visceral Games likely wanted to have a little fun with things, especially given the horrifying and violent nature of Dead Space 2.

Right now, it seems to be a good time to be a Dead Space fan, with a lot to look forward to over the next few years. Perhaps most obvious is the remake. With cut content from the original being implemented, and the promise of zero microtransactions, despite it being overseen by EA, the remake of the original from 2008 is almost certainly going to be a pleasing return for fans. It probably helps that the art director who worked on Dead Space 2 is also lending a hand in the project. This will hopefully recapture what made the first game so beloved.

The Dead Space remake is currently in development.
