Dead or Alive 6 was quietly announced last year, and hasn't had much in the way of big showcases or events in the months leading up to its release. However, the game is now available, and is finding itself at the center of controversy for its expensive season pass that costs more than the base game.

The Dead or Alive 6 Season Pass 1 costs about $93, and mainly consists of alternate costumes. In March, season pass owners can download new costumes for NiCO (one of the game's new characters) and Nyotengu, as well as two sets of Happy Wedding costumes. More costumes are scheduled to release in April and May, and June will see the release of The King of Fighters 14 collaboration. The King of Fighters 14 DLC will add Mai Shiranui, new costumes for Mai, an unannounced second character, and new costumes for that character.

It's unclear if the scope of Season Pass 1 will extend beyond June, but that doesn't seem like a ton of content for the nearly $100 asking price. Considering this, it's likely that there will be more content included in Season Pass 1, though Koei Tecmo has yet to reveal what that content could be.

It's also worth pointing out there may be some paid DLC released during the Season Pass 1 period that's not included in the season pass. However, to its credit, Koei Tecmo is also offering some free updates for Dead or Alive 6 players as well. This free content almost exclusively consists of new entry and victory scenes for the various fighters, which doesn't seem substantial, but some would argue that it's better than nothing.

Dead or Alive 6's expensive season pass may prove controversial, but it's almost par for the course for fighting games. Fighting games have been notorious with their microtransactions and DLC, as the nature of the games make alternate costumes an easy way to make a quick buck off fans. In fact, Dead or Alive 5 has over $1,000 worth of DLC alone, so Dead or Alive 6 is just following in its predecessor's footsteps, more or less.

Whether or not Dead or Alive 6's aggressive DLC model translates into lost fans remains to be seen. The game has yet to be reviewed by most publications due to its online features not being live until today, and so it's hard to say at this point if the gameplay makes up for any questionable business practices.

Dead or Alive 6 is out now for Arcade, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
