It seems like it's been ages since Dead Island 2 was revealed, and by gaming standards, it has been. The game was first shown off back at E3 2014, early on in the life cycle of the PS4 and Xbox One. Now, five years later, there's still no release date for Dead Island 2though that may be for good reason according to the game's publisher, Koch Media.

According to Koch Media CEO Klemens Kundratitz, the company is dedicated to ensuring a good product. "Look, Dead Island is a very important brand for us and we've got to get it right," Kundratitz said in an interview. "It's just a testimony of our dedication to get it right." Kundratitz went on to explain that the company would rather be judged by the end product than by how long development on a project takes. Hopefully, Kundratitz statement is enough to stave off questions of whether or not Dead Island 2 is still happening.

Dead Island 2 has been juggled around quite a bit since it entered development. The game has swapped hands many times, moving from development studio to development studio. It's a classic example of how complex and onerous game development can be. That being said, Kundratitz's dedication to shipping a good final product is admirable, though only time will tell how Dead Island 2 turns out.

There haven't been many updates on Dead Island 2 as of late. Back in August, it was confirmed that the game was still in development with a different team, Dambuster Studios, but little has been seen or heard of the game beyond that. Dead Island 2's original developer, Techland, is now working on Dying Light 2, which is also being published by Koch Media, oddly enough.

It could still be quite some time before Dead Island 2 launches, and it's possible that the game will end up landing on the PS5 and Xbox Project Scarlett rather than this console generation. That may even be the best move at this point, as a drought of software at the beginning of a console's lifespan can lead to some unlikely success stories, which may just be the edge Dead Island 2 would need to garner interest from fans of the series that may be a bit more cautious after such a long development period. Hopefully, gamers will be able to get their hands on the game before the PlayStation 6 launches.

Dead Island 2 does not have a release date.
