Dead Cells' developer Motion Twin revealed on Twitter the last guest to join the "Everyone is Here" update, showing a short clip of our favourite possessed corpse wielding the Hollow Knight's famous sword.
Roguelike smash hit Dead Cells took over the indie game scene on PC back in 2017. Set in an island prison, the player takes control of an amorphous creature possessing the body of a headless corpse. Since its release Dead Cells has seen many successes, including passing major milestones in sales, and seeing Android and iOS releases of the game. In 2021, most wouldn't blame developer Motion Twin if it decided to move towards new projects, having supported Dead Cells consistently over the last four years. Yet, Motion Twin revealed that Dead Cells would be getting a free update on November 22, bringing a six game crossover within the roguelike.
This crossover will add iconic weapons and abilities from major indie titles. Blasphemous, Skul: The Hero Slayer, Guacamelee, Hyper Light Drifter, Curse Of The Dead Gods, and of course, Hollow Knight will all be involved in the free update. In terms of abilities, the player will now be able to transform into a chicken and the addition of Blasphemous will add a reviving bile flask.
As stated, Hollow Knight comes as the last crossover to be revealed for the update. Like Dead Cells, Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania action game, though the latter doesn't have the roguelike mechanics of the former is more of a traditional action platformer. Praised for its unique visual style and engaging combat, many were expecting Hollow Knight to be included in the "Everyone is Here" update. Though Motion Twin has said the Knight himself is "too shy" to be included in Dead Cells, his sword will be available to use, and players will be able to defeat enemies by stomping on their heads, known as pogoing.
The inclusion of all these indie legends in one free update is quite the gift, yet the release of this update raises some questions, specifically about possible sequels to both Hollow Knight and Dead Cells. Hollow Knight: Silksong is the planned title for the sequel to Hollow Knight, though we haven't got a planned release date for that game, with the latest news being that it wouldn't be shown off at this year's E3. Shrouded in even more obscurity is the possibility of a Dead Cells sequel. While some are hoping that we can see a new addition to the franchise soon, with a new DLC titled "Fatal Falls" being released earlier this year, and updates still being frequently released, it seems Motion Twin is more than happy with Dead Cells as it stands.
Dead Cells is available now on Android, iOS, PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One. The "Everyone is Here" update releases on the same platforms on November 22.
