Behaviour Interactive's co-op horror title Dead by Daylight has been enjoying a huge amount of success, particularly in the last couple of years with online gaming and streaming on the rise, thanks largely to the pandemic. It's generally considered one of the go-to multiplayer games especially during Halloween, with its blend of horror survival, teamwork, and a roster of killers lifted from popular franchises. However, the studio recently came under fire with regard to a controversial decision which the community immediately took a disliking to. Now the company has responded to these criticisms.

Recently, the developer announced on Twitter that Dead by Daylight would be approved for NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, which allows players to original owners of digital assets. Fans immediately hit back at Behaviour, insisting that not only was such a move controversial, but that such crypto-tactics were damaging to the environment given the energy-sapping mining that takes place. One user even pointed out that the studio had initially said that it would never implement NFTs into the game, and that this latest development showed that it had gone back on its word.

Now, the studio itself has issued a follow-up tweet, posting a couple of days ago. In the post, it said that "blockchain tech" does not exist in Dead by Daylight, adding that "nor will it ever." As to be expected, fans have replied to this tweet, similarly unimpressed with the company's response to the initial outcry. Some have accused Behaviour Interactive of covering their own backs by insisting that it's not the studio itself that is selling NFTs, but a company called Boss Protocol does, which it has partnered up with. Others have expressed concern that the reputation of the game and its developer has been tarnished because of the news, and the statement that followed it.

Non-fungible tokens are unique data codes that exist on a digital ledger, similar to other cryptocurrency. It is represented by digital content, such as images, audio, or other files, and when purchased, means that the buyer has ownership of the original. Some have questioned how a person can own an original copy of something that can be digitally replicated perfectly, unlike something physical, like a piece of art or a signed first edition novel. While some company's have embraced it, others such as Valve have outright banned NFT tech from their platforms.

Although Dead by Daylight is still being updated, with Tome nine going live yesterday, this latest controversy could put the studio into disrepute among the community. It remains to be seen how Behaviour Interactive will respond to this latest reaction, but for some, the game has been marred by this unpopular business venture.

Dead by Daylight is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Switch, mobile devices, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
