The last few weeks haven’t been the best for Dead by Daylight and developer Behaviour Interactive. Both the game and studio came under fire for adding NFTs (which remain incredibly controversial even as more and more game publishers begin embracing them) and Behaviour is also having to remove Stranger Things content from the game due to its licensing agreement expiring.

As disappointing as the loss of content is, fans can at least look forward to Dead by Daylight’s next major expansion later this month. Announced on Behaviour’s official website, the new chapter is titled Portrait of a Murder and is described as a return to Dead by Daylight’s roots. It will include completely original characters and a new location. This one, in particular, is being highlighted for featuring the game’s first Mexican American character.

There aren’t any gameplay details yet for the new Killer and Survivor, but Behaviour has shared some lore for both characters. The Killer, dubbed The Artist, was once a Chilean painter named Carmina Mora who nearly took her own life before being saved by a murder of crows. She would use her art to expose local corruption but was eventually kidnapped and maimed. Her assailants were soon assaulted by crows as she was taken by The Entity. It can probably be assumed that her abilities will involve commanding the crows.

The new Dead by Daylight Survivor, meanwhile, is CIA codebreaker Jonah Vasquez, who has been seeing a certain string of numbers everywhere since his teenagerhood. During a CIA assignment, he discovered a formula that took him to a lost cemetery in Chile, where it seems The Artist’s crows were waiting for him. The cemetery itself, known as The Forsaken Boneyard, looks to be the new map and was where The Artist was murdered.

This wasn’t the only major announcement. Ever since its release in 2016, PC users could only play Dead by Daylight through Steam, but soon the game will finally be available via the Epic Games Store. It will release in December and players will be able to access the base game, all past editions, and all DLC available at the moment of release, including Portrait of a Murder. Cross-play and cross-platform progression between Steam, Stadia, and Epic will also be possible.

As for future crossovers, there’s nothing official yet but a recent leak points to Dead by Daylight receiving content based on The Conjuring series of movies. Apparently, this content will be part of the next chapter following Portrait of a Murder, although the leak didn’t indicate which of The Conjuring’s monsters/entities will act as the chapter’s Killer.

Dead by Daylight is available for Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
