Dead by Daylight's cosmetic skins are purchasable through microtransactions. Some cosmetics are linked to particular sets that are not meant to be interchanged with other cosmetic items, while some may be swapped and worn in a number of different permeations for respective characters. But though it is not encouraged or technically allowed, players have been able to find ways to swap Dead by Daylight's predetermined cosmetic outfits.

Cosmetic swap glitches allow players to swap a linked set piece with other cosmetics and vice versa with some effort. Behaviour Interactive's argument against this glitch is that it must "preserve the image of licensed characters", though the use of this glitch on Dead by Daylight's original characters is frowned upon as well. However, numerous bans have started surfacing throughout the Dead by Daylight community, with players claiming that they are being punished for this glitch alone.

Lately, confused Dead by Daylight players have suggested that Behaviour may be banning them for using this cosmetic glitch. Bruster112's ban notice vaguely explains that they were banned due to exploits, stating the abuse of "bugs or errors in design to gain a competitive advantage." Strangely enough, these cosmetic glitches are purely ornamental and have no perceivable affect on gameplay. But Bruster112 only assumes that the ban was a result of cosmetic glitches, because that is the only erroneous affair that they were allegedly up to.

Many others in the community have expressed their disbelief in cosmetic glitches being the cause of recent bans, however. Because the ban notice states "competitive advantage" specifically, players have considered that Bruster112's ban may have been the result of some unfair leverage in a match that maybe Bruster112 themself is unaware of.

Indeed, Behaviour's own admittance that players would not be punished so severely for cosmetic glitches stemmed from the lack of competitive advantage that it grants. This was in Behaviour's words, so players are hoping that the developer has not changed its stance on the matter and are electing to trust Behaviour when it says this would not result in a ban.

Regardless, it is unclear what the actual cause of these bans may be, though some players think it could also be because of another player's report of abuse or some other means to have someone removed. Because this has resulted in players receiving permanent bans on console platforms, others have also suggested that anyone who thinks they have been banned for cosmetic glitches should contact Behaviour with an appeal if they feel it was truly unjust.

Dead by Daylight is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
