Good news, DC Comics fans. Sony Online Entertainment has finally announced an official release timeframe for its superhero MMO, DC Universe Online. This title has been in the works for a couple of years now, and I was starting to wonder if it would actually release. MMO's do not exactly have the best track record of actually making it to the consoles (see Champions Online, Marvel Universe Online, True Fantasy Online, etc.). Sony apparently looks to end that trend as DC Universe is now scheduled to be available this upcoming November.

I had the opportunity to try DC Universe at the last two San Diego Comic-Con events, and I did not feel that it was breaking new ground or particularly compelling unless you were a DC diehard. In my opinion, City of Heroes provided a better game experience, despite not having any licensed superhero characters. Apparently, other convention-goers agreed, because getting hands-on time with DC Universe was a pretty easy experience in comparison to other games on display. I recalled thinking that if a game based on comic-book characters couldn't attract a lot of attention at THE comic-book convention of the year, it may never see the light of day.

Sony must have kept the faith, however, and the fact that a release date has been announced hopefully means the gameplay has improved.

We fully expect to get our hands on DC Universe at E3, so stay tuned for our impressions.

DC Universe Online is set for release on both the PlayStation 3 and PC sometime during November 2010.
