Avengers might be the Earth's Mightiest Heroes but as far as the Justice League is concerned, they're no match for them. It isn't only the question of seniority but also the fact that the Justice League has more super-powered heroes among their ranks than the Avengers do. But even without the comparisons, the Justice League is a force to be reckoned with.

It celebrated its 62nd birthday this year and is showing no signs of slowing down, with hundreds, if not thousands of comic book storylines under its belt. Considering the rich and vast history of the team, it makes sense that some moments in the Justice League's history were more important than others and all fans who want to know even more about the team should read about them in the comic books.

5 The Creation Of The Justice League

The Brave and the Bold 28

Before any superhero team can start fighting evil and protecting people, it has to be created first. Considering his gruff demeanor and lone wolf personality, it's somewhat ironic that Batman was one of the founding members of the Justice League. This happened in The Brave And The Bold #28 back in March 1960, making the team even older than Marvel's Avengers. The remaining founding members of the Justice League other than Batman were Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Superman, and Wonder Woman.

That makes the Justice League's comic book origins slightly different from the DCEU. Even though Batman was the first one to put the team together, only Aquaman, Flash, and Wonder Woman were present. Superman joined the team later after his revival, Martian Manhunter only made an appearance in Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) and Green Lantern continues to be suspiciously absent from the DCEU.

4 Batman Betrays The League In Tower Of Babel

JLA Tower of Babel

Even though Batman was one of the founding members of the Justice League, his paranoid and suspicious nature had a negative impact on the workings of the team. Most notably in this iconic storyline in which Batman's hidden plan of how to defeat all Justice League members if they went rogue gets into the wrong hands. This not only puts the entire team in danger but also breaks the trust between Batman and the rest of the League.

So much so that when the Justice League deals with the crisis, they vote on whether Batman should stay on the team or not. This series shows how little it takes for the team to fall apart at the seams, similar to Marvel's Civil War. Tower of Babel is a bitter and dark moment in the Justice League's history that nevertheless makes for a compelling read. It was also adapted into an animated movie, Justice League: Doom, in 2012.

3 Zatanna Erases Batman's Memories In Identity Crisis

Zatanna uses her powers on Batman

By all rules, the Justice League should be united, and the heroes shouldn't keep secrets from one another, at least not those related to their superhero activity. After the attack on Sue Dibney, the Elongated Man's wife, the League decides to punish Doctor Light, whom they believe to be the person responsible.

Zatanna wipes Doctor Light's mind and when Batman disagrees with the League's actions, Zatanna erases his memories against his will. It's a major breach of trust for Batman, and it has an effect on future events as it leads to the creation of the Brother Eye satellite that later plays an important part in the Infinite Crisis event, one of the biggest events in the DC comic book universe.

2 Superheroes Die In The Crisis

Crisis on Infinite Earths

All the moments in this iconic storyline had a major impact on the Justice League as well as other superheroes. The most notable effect is that the events of the Crisis led to the death of several superheroes, including Supergirl and the Flash (Barry Allen). Another major change was the fact that there no longer were multiple versions of Earth in different universes but just one Earth where most of the heroes now resided.

Crisis on Infinite Earths became so prominent that it was adapted into a crossover event in the Arrowverse, one that followed the events in the comic book more closely than other Arrowverse events, even though the TV version saw the death of different characters than the comic book one. Both versions also brought one of the most powerful DC villains onto the scene - the Anti-Monitor.

1 Darkseid Triumphs In Rock Of Ages

Darkseid

The Justice League faced many powerful enemies over the years. But one of the most dangerous ones is Darkseid, who could almost function as DC's version of Thanos. In this storyline, Darkseid found the Anti-Life Equation and finally got control over everyone. When the Justice League learned what happened in the present time, they tried to figure out a way how to stop this dark future from happening.

And as all science fiction movies show, stopping the future from happening is a harder task than it might seem. If this story didn't make it obvious how deadly Darkseid is, the DCeased series in which Darkseid succeeded, turned almost all heroes into zombie-like creatures, making it even more obvious. However, DCeased stands outside the major universe, making for a similar alternative as Marvel Zombies.
