DC Films has had a rough past couple of years with their live-action films, but they recently found new hope in the leadership of Peter Safran and James Gunn for what’s now being dubbed the DC Universe. The new leadership is promising much higher quality content for fans while lessening restrictions, as recent news reveals Warner Bros. and Amazon are closing a deal to develop brand-new DC animated content.

It’s no secret that DC movies have fallen behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but with the new co-leads, things are shaping up to be much more cohesive. Gunn recently confirmed the DC Universe will connect TV, movies, animation, and games. The leads have even sat down to write a 10-year release plan that will follow one central storyline. To make this 10-year plan work as smoothly as possible, DC needs to utilize every resource possible.

Speaking at the U.K. Television conference in London, Channing Dungey, the head of Warner Bros. Television, discussed how the new management at Warner Bros. Discovery has opened the door for a deal between DC and Amazon. "One of the interesting things that's exciting for me at this moment, the approach of the previous management was much more like 'Everything has to stay in house, we don't want anything to go outside,'" Dungey said. "David Zaslav has been much more open to exploring all of our animated IP and being able to do it on different platforms. Certainly, HBO Max is going to be our first stop but we're already in the process of closing a big deal with Amazon that's going to feature some of our DC-branded content in animation."

DC Amazon

This deal between Amazon and DC is still pending, so fans will have to wait to see if they do solidify the agreement. However, the potential that this union has is very high. Amazon distributes the much more dark superhero shows such as The Boys and Invincible, which means fans may get some content in line with the writing of those two successful shows. Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad fit the action comedy genre, so it's not far-fetched to expect Amazon's take on darker animated spin-offs of popular DC heroes.

However, it's also possible that the shows won't necessarily be violent but more mature, like the Harley Quinn animated series on HBO Max. Gunn has previously confirmed that Harley Quinn will return, so fans should expect more content from the famous jester. Regardless of where this deal goes, let's hope it gives more shine to the heroes who don't get nearly as many outings as Batman or Superman. It would be nice to see a DC series that included heroes such as Static Shock, Vixen or Red Tornado, to name a few.
