Without a doubt, many would consider Sony and Bend Studio's forthcoming action-adventure game Days Gone to be one of the PS4's most highly anticipated exclusives, but there are potentially those out there who aren't even keeping the title on their radar due to the seeming overabundance of releases in the zombie genre lately. While this may be the case for some, it sounds as if the development team at Bend Studio is sure it will be able to overcome such doubt surrounding the game once it's released.

This much was discussed during a recent interview held between Game Informer and Days Gone creative director, John Garvin, with the latter starting off the discussion to say, "Zombie fatigue is something we've dealt with from the very beginning." Despite this, he remains confident that fans will respond positively to the game, as it's "not like any zombie game you've ever played." According to Garvin, "Fighting the horde, for one thing, is massively different than most other types of games that you're going to experience."

In addition to having to convert gamers who may be tired of the zombie genre into fans of Days Gone, Garvin also addresses the issue of the Bend Studio title joining a glut of other recent releases that contain sprawling open worlds to explore. For instance, 2017 alone saw the launches of such products as Horizon: Zero Dawn, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Assassin's Creed Origins, while 2018 already has the likes of Far Cry 5. According to Garvin, Days Gone will set itself apart by being "one of the first open world games that's dangerous all the time."

"You don't have to go find faction wars, and get involved in that. You can be on your way to a mission and get knocked off your bike by a Runner, which is an infected wolf, and the same time, you're running low on gas, and you've done a bunch of squirreling around off-road, and your bike's damaged.

"So, the story's something like 30 hours, but it's going to take a lot longer than that, because things are going to happen to you along the way depending on how careful you are, depending on how much you pay attention. I don't know of any other open world game that does that."

While there are definitely a plethora of fans who are practically champing at the bit to get their hands on Days Gone as soon as it launches in 2019, there will always be a certain crowd who will choose to maintain reservations about a game before its release. This sentiment is particularly true when it comes to a game that will be utilizing such familiar conventions as zombies and an open world. That said, though, certain story tropes and gameplay features have longevity and are consistently appealing for a reason.

As a final takeaway, Days Gone's creative director tells gamers to simply give it a shot, stating, "I would say the overall message for skeptics is that we are not the zombie game you think we are." According to Garvin, one of the best ways for fans to dispel suspicion that it's just going to be another drab open world post-apocalyptic affair with the undead is to "play it and see what you think."
