Before Capcom released its highly-acclaimed and financially successful Resident Evil 2 remake, Italian indie developer Invader Studios hoped to do the original PlayStation classic justice in a fan-driven project that shifted focus to become Daymare: 1998. After releasing on Steam in September 2019, the survival horror title is now preparing to drop on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this April.

Daymare: 1998 received middling reviews upon release, with a healthy mix of love for the cheesy throw-back to early Resident Evil games and annoyance at some clunky mechanics, landing the independent venture at a 62 on review aggregate Metacritic. However, the game proudly boasts its niche as a return "to the roots of survival horror" and a $29.99 price tag that makes it arguably very accessible compared to the genre's older, more established cousins.

Invader Studios announced Daymare: 1998's expanding console presence on Twitter Thursday, letting the world know that "the contagion is spreading" on April 28. That lands the game on a larger stage just a few weeks after Capcom's Resident Evil 3 remake.

Survival horror has been incredibly in style as of late. Not only is Resident Evil 3 coming quite soon off the heels of the fan-favorite RE2 remake, but the series is also making cameos in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne — which, to be fair, is another Capcom series, but one with a very different fanbase.

There are also plans to expand the franchise into other forms of media beyond the financial juggernaut film franchise starring Milla Jovovich that started in the early 2000s. Netflix will start shooting its Resident Evil series this summer, one that many hope will become as widely regarded online as the streaming service's fantasy novel adaptation The Witcher.

At the same time, Konami's landmark survival horror series Silent Hill is beginning to resurface after the unfortunate fate of Hideo Kojima's Silent Hills. Not only have there been leaks suggesting multiple games are in the works, but a new Silent Hill movie is officially in development.

Invader Studios' Daymare: 1998 finds itself in the middle of what could be described as a renaissance of the genre, one that may give it an extra push while jumping into the console space. Other indie games like Artur Laczkowski's Silent Hill-inspired Death of Rose are capturing the same zeitgeist, so survival horror fans should find themselves with plenty to play in the near future.

Daymare: 1998 is available now on Steam, and will be available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on April 28, 2020.
