New Kickstarter funded game will allow players to control parody versions of their favorite video game developers to stop the Chief Evil Overlord from destroying video games.

Hideo Kojima’s much publicized split from Konami left many with the impression that Konami had unfairly treated the man behind some of the company’s most successful titles. While Kojima has certainly bounced back from that setback with his highly anticipated Death Stranding, many fans still feel protective of him.

Viewing Kojima as a hero of the video game industry is nothing new, but now a kickstarter funded game wants to make Kojima the hero of a video game. Well not exactly Kojima, the character’s name is actually Hiro Komiya, and he’s one of the three main characters of Dawn of the Devs.

Here’s the summary from the game’s kickstarter page:

Dawn of the Devs is a 2D puzzle platformer where three game industry gurus (Tom Schiffer, Biff Klozinski and Hiro Komiya) embark on an epic quest after they are drawn into the Wicked World of Gaming, an alternate world where every negative aspect of the game industry has come to life thanks to the dark arts of a sinister character.  Together they'll have to combine their unique abilities while they journey through twisted lands, defeating enemies and solving puzzles to rid the World of Gaming from the menace that has risen and threatens to destroy the game industry forever.”

From that description, anyone who follows the video game industry can probably gather that these main characters are parodies of Kojima, creator of Gears of War Cliff Bleszinski, and Psychonauts’ creator Tim Schafer. The similarities to their real world inspirations don’t stop at their names; the trailer shows that each character has a trademark weapon or ability from their most famous titles.

Bleszinki’s character is shown to wield an assault rifle that is clearly based off of the Mark 2 Lancer from the Gears of War series. Schafer’s character appears to have an impossibly large personal inventory and an old school cursor from point and click games, while Kojima’s character brings the iconic cardboard box from the Metal Gear Solid series to hide from enemies.

The Kickstarter is currently seeking $65,000 in funding for a PC version of the game and is aiming for a November 18th release. A console version of the game is also a possibility, but will require the campaign reach $100,000.

If that goal is reached, then the developer promises to add three more characters based on Peter Molyneux, Gabe Newell, and Shigeru Miyamoto. The campaign is currently floating at around $10,000 so anyone who’d like to donate should kick in a few dollars. However, since it’s a Kickstarter backed game anyone who contributes should keep in mind that Kickstarter games don’t always deliver on what’s promised.

Dawn of the Devs has a planned release window of November 18th.
