Star Wars is rumored to be getting a new animated series that will focus on the fan-favorite Darth Maul. The character is known for being a force-sensitive Sith Lord who was very strong and dangerous.

The rumored Darth Maul project will reportedly be set prior to the events of the Han Solo spin-off movie. Fans of Star Wars know the fate of Darth Maul during the events of Star Wars Rebels, so it's unclear if this show will lead into those events or just be a separate telling of his side adventures.

This rumor comes from CineLinx, as they cited 'multiple sources' that claimed the Darth Maul project was already in the works. The series is set to fill in the gap for a lot of the character's missing story beats. Darth Maul was in and out of the viewers' eye during the overall course of the Star Wars lore. Maul was introduced during the first episodic Star Wars film, The Phantom Menace, and was thought to have been killed off. However, he eventually returned to the Clone Wars series as a shell of himself, was revived, then met another fate in the Star Wars Rebels series. According to one source from the outlet, the series will focus on Maul's time as the leader of Crimson Dawn before the events of Solo, and Paul Bettany is allegedly expected to return to voice Dryden Vos.

Sam Witwer is expected to reprise his role for the rumored show, having previously voiced the character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Rebels, and Solo: A Star Wars Story. It will also require no fight choreography rehearsal or stunt work since it's all animated, which will make it a lot safer for the creative team to capture the aesthetic of Darth Maul's fights. The outlet also claims the series lines up with what they've heard regarding Lucasfilm's plans for Crimson Dawn.

Darth Maul is known for being a popular character, especially amongst the deep roster of Star Wars villains. Maul is also one of the most athletic fighters, as he flips, cartwheels, and kicks around his opponents in battle. On the other hand, Darth Vader fights very differently, as he stands more upright, using one hand to swing his saber while the other is free to utilize the force.

Maul is one of many characters that are loved by fans but haven't got much screen time. Boba Fett is another example, and it's great that the character will be getting his own spin-off series on Disney Plus. Star Wars moving forward would benefit from the continued pursuit of spin-off projects instead of the mainline movies.

The Star Wars saga is now available on Disney Plus.
