With the successful launch of the Nintendo Switch, gamers have seen a number of developers cancel Wii U titles in favor of Switch versions, as was the case with both Yooka-Laylee and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. While most studios are leaving the Wii U behind for newer hardware, Darksiders: Warmastered Edition is staying loyal to Nintendo's old system, releasing May 23rd at a budget price.

Priced at $20, Darksiders: Warmastered Edition is a remastered version of the original Darksiders game. Like its PS4 and Xbox One counterparts, the Wii U version of Darksiders: Warmastered Edition features HD graphics and an improved frame rate. The Wii U version will have additional bells and whistles as well, mainly its use of the GamePad, which may partly explain why it was delayed and the other versions of the game released on time.

Wii U owners that are still playing their console may appreciate the chance to play the remastered version of Darksiders, but it doesn't seem like there's going to be a large market for the game. At last count, Wii U had barely passed 12 million units sold, and even Nintendo has abandoned it, instead focusing its resources on creating games for the 3DS and Nintendo Switch.

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition Announced for PC and Current-Gen Consoles

Perhaps Darksiders: Warmastered Edition will come to the Nintendo Switch as well. It's possible that THQ Nordic chose to keep working on the Wii U version of the game because too much progress had already been made on it by the time the Switch was revealed to the world. Now that the Switch is out in the wild and selling like hotcakes, it seems likely that THQ Nordic will bring some of its games to the system.

THQ Nordic's insistence on bringing Darksiders: Warmastered Edition to the Wii U shows that the company is dedicated to bringing its games to Nintendo fans, even when it seems like it wouldn't be a very fruitful effort. Since the Switch is on track to eclipsing the Wii U's install base, with some analysts predicting it will top 40 million units by 2020, it seems like a Switch version of Darksiders: Warmastered Edition is a no-brainer for THQ Nordic.

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition is available now for PS4 and Xbox One, and will release for the Nintendo Switch on May 23rd.
