It's been a little over a year since we learned the Darksiders series would return, with the upcoming Darksiders 3 set to launch this November. While developer Gunfire Games and THQ Nordic are putting the final touches on their newest adventure ahead of its launch in the coming months, the team based out of Austin, Texas has voiced their desire to continue the franchise in the future.

News of a possible fourth Darksiders game was mentioned during a gameplay presentation for Darksiders 3 at Gamescom this week. During the presentation, senior designer Richard Vorodi told those in attendance that "the plan was always four," when asked about the future of Darksiders following the new release this holiday.

The Darksiders series, the hack-and-slash post-apocalyptic action game formerly from Vigil Games, first launched back in 2010. In both the first game and its sequel, Darksiders 2, players take on the role of one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, with the series' first two protagonists being War and Death, respectively. Darksiders 3 sees players in the shoes of the third horseman, Fury, who provides some of the evidence needed as to why there may be the push for an eventual Darksiders 4 in the next few years.

Following the release of Darksiders 2 back in 2012, the series has seen a huge shake-up on the development end. A few months following its release, publisher THQ filed for bankruptcy at the end of 2012. The game's original developer, Vigil Games, did not receive any offers from bidders following the relinquishing of THQ's assets, forcing the studio to shut down just a month later.

While developer Gunfire Games' history of game releases are centered around smaller VR experiences, they did release the remastered Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition back in 2015. Fortunately, the team at Gunfire consists of many members from the defunct Vigil Games, which shows they not only have experience developing games on current consoles but already have a familiarity with the Darksiders property.

With the idea of playing as each of the Four Horsemen in the Darksiders series, it makes sense for the team to continue on with one more game in the future. The first two games in the series had a strong reception when they released a few years ago, with the financial struggles surrounding THQ being the main factor in the six-year wait between releases.

Darksiders 3 launches November 27th for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
