Since launching a little under a month ago, Gunfire Games' Darksiders 3 hasn't had the buzz their development team was hoping for. With an entire shift in the way combat works, the team based out of Austin, Texas has been looking for new ways to update the game to both win back players and hopefully gain a few new ones. One of their plans involves bringing back the option to choose between the game's default combat and the original style of earlier Darksiders games to convince people to give the game a shot.

The newest update for Darksiders 3 has added a "Classic" combat mode, which works similar to how the prior two games in the series handled fighting. The most notable change in combat is players can now interrupt their own attacks by dodging, whereas the default form of combat forces Fury, the game's main protagonist, to commit to her attacks before being able to execute her next move. Another vital change as part of "Classic" combat is Fury can now use consumable items instantly. A problem players were having beforehand was that using an item required an entire character animation, meaning Fury could die while in the middle of trying to heal herself.

Gunfire Games has also added a number of quality of life updates in the game's newest version. Some of these changes include more frequent checkpoints, raising the level cap to 200, increased effects of enchantments, better level balancing after hitting level 80, and numerous bugs and crash fixes reported on by player feedback during the game's roughly 15 hour campaign.

Both Gunfire Games and THQ Nordic have been adamant about making one more Darksiders game sometime in the future, though given the weak sales since Darksiders 3 launched over three weeks ago, the possibility of a new entry could prove too tough a task to take on. It's upsetting to see the downward trend of the series, given the ups and downs the franchise has had the past few years, with its initial development studio shutting down after the release of Darksiders 2 before being reacquired after the resurrection of the THQ name. For now, the best chance for any sort of commercial response for Darksiders 3 this time of year will likely come in the form of a steep holiday discount.

Darksiders 3 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
