Darksiders 3 wasn't exactly a rip-roaring critical success upon its release. Despite being a long-awaited sequel to a dormant franchise which hadn't seen a new game since 2012, critics either found it to be merely average or, as we put it in our review, "... completely and utterly broken, but even when it works (which is almost never), it amounts to nothing more than a below average hack-and-slash with some decent puzzles." It's not all doom and gloom for the series, however, as commercially, the title fared a lot better and is actually considered a success by publisher THQ Nordic.

According to the publisher's interim report covering the calendar year 2018, Darksiders 3 "performed within management’s range of expectations and has recouped all investments made in development and marketing during the quarter." For fans of the hack-and-slash franchise, this is certainly good news since it could mean that they won't have to wait another five years for a sequel.

The Darksiders series so far has featured three of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse as playable characters, which leaves only Strife left to take the starring role. Considering that the developer Gunfire Games has expressed a desire to make one more Darksiders title, it's more of a matter of when than if.

Darksiders 3's financial success is most certainly is good news for THQ Nordic, which seems to be going from strength to strength recently, having also acquired Warhorse Studios - the developer behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance. This is the latest in a line of acquisitions that also includes Kingdom of Amalur and the Timesplitters series.

At any rate, we will simply have to wait and see what the future holds for the direct followup to Darksiders 3. Even though the third entry released to lackluster critical reception, it looks as if the franchise's popularity remains strong with fans.
