UPDATEDarksiders 3 has been officially announced. Here's the reveal trailer:

It has been a long time since a new Darksiders game was on anyone's radar. After the closure of Vigil Games four years ago, former creative director Joe Madureira discussed what the future of Darksiders would have looked like, but since then there has been little in the way of news regarding the status of the IP. Today, however, is a big day for fans of the Darksiders series, as Amazon inadvertently leaked the existence of Darksiders 3, and the game is being made by the makers of its predecessors as well.

Amazon pushed the Darksiders 3 page live earlier today ahead of any official announcements that the game was even being developed, revealing what its principle features would be alongside first looks at screenshots and concept art related to the game. According to the listing, the game will star a female protagonist named Fury, a mage who is armed with a whip melee weapon and several magical abilities as well. Fury will also possess the ability to shift between different forms, each of which will grant her access to new weapons, moves, and transportation abilities. Here's a look at Fury standing alongside another character who appears to be a blacksmith of some sort:

The Amazon listing also hinted at some of the bigger design concepts of Darksiders 3, indicating that the world would be "open-ended" and produced as a "free-form" adventure. Fury's quest is to restore balance between the forces of good and evil, and to do so, she will need to defeat the Seven Deadly Sins. Judging from the position of the narrative relative to Darksiders lore, it appears that Darksiders 3 will be taking place after the events of the first game.

For those wondering about the team behind Darksiders 3, the game is being developed by Gunfire Games, a studio that features a number of former Vigil Games staff. Darksiders 3 will also be published by THQ Nordic, the publisher whose resurrection spawned rumors that a new Darksiders game could be possible, although few, if any, expected news would come this soon. The Amazon page currently features a placeholder date that suggests December 31, 2018 as the release schedule for Darksiders 3, but it is likely that date will change significantly when THQ Nordic and Gunfire Games officially announce Darksiders 3's development.

What seemed like an impossibility just four years ago has now been confirmed as a reality, and Darksiders fans everywhere will be waiting with bated breath to discover more about the new instalment in a series they likely believed was dead. It's disappointing for those who are working on the game that Darksiders 3 was leaked, of course, but it's hard not to be more excited than skeptical when it comes to one of the more stylish, unique series in the past decade.

Darksiders 3 will be released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. No official release date has been announced.
