Last year, when Nintendo was running down the list of titles they hoped would make their way to the Wii U, one of the games that caught our eye was Darksiders II. Ostensibly an HD version of The Legend of Zelda franchise, Darksiders was exactly what fans had been asking from Nintendo, only with a glossy sheen. Despite many of those promised games failing to be slated for Wii U release, Vigil Games has confirmed that Darksiders II will be a Wii U launch title.

Before any clever gamers out there try to put two and two together and surmise that this must mean the Wii U will launch alongside Darksiders II in June let's nip that thought in the bud, it's not happening. According to Vigil, though, they are working on some stuff that would allow Darksiders II to take advantage of the Wii U's bells and whistles, but the core experience should be the same.

Having experienced the Zelda Wii U demo during E3 a likely candidate for the console's integration with Darksiders would involve using the touch screen controller as inventory management. In the first Darksiders, protagonist War had quite the plethora of weapons and gadgets to choose from, and the game handled accessing them fairly well, but Vigil wants those equipment switches to be instantaneous.

"One of the things that we did, when we were originally going to show it off, was that you could equip stuff directly. So, for instance, I could be running along and I could click on another piece and I could put it on as I'm running through the game."

Aside from that, though, the Wii U integration is a complete mystery. Obviously the standard controller-based gameplay that will be available to players when Darksiders launches in June will be significantly different from what will be seen on the Wii U, but how exactly is unclear.

Even just being able to better manage Death's inventory — as he tries to clear his brother's name — would be an added bonus, and might be worth waiting a few months for. It's up to Vigil to sway fans into holding off on purchasing a version for current gen consoles, and it's up to Nintendo to launch sooner rather than later.

Would you be interested in checking out Darksiders II on the Wii U? How do you think Vigil should leverage the Wii U's feature set to convince fans that this is the version worth owning?

Darksiders II launches June 26, 2012 for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
