As players start their time with Darkest Dungeon 2, they will have access to just four heroes: the Graverobber, Highwayman, Man-At-Arms, and Plague Doctor. These are certainly not the only classes that are available in the game, though, and there are actually five more that can be unlocked at the time of writing. For those fans that are curious about how to get more of these heroes in Darkest Dungeon 2, this guide has full details on the process.

How to Unlock Characters in Darkest Dungeon

Quite simply, players that are looking to gain access to additional Darkest Dungeon 2 heroes should focus on increasing their Profile Level. For the uninitiated, Profile Levels are earned by amassing Hope, which is granted at the end of runs based on performance. Notably, there are opportunities to get bonus Hope during runs, such as completing optional objectives, and fans of hard RPGs that want to unlock characters fast should try to take advantage of them.

With that established, some Darkest Dungeon fans may be curious about exactly what Profile Levels they need to reach in order to get more heroes. Here is information on exactly how that breaks down, and fans can check their current Profile Levels by looking at the top of the menu that appears upon pressing Esc:

  • Hellion (Level 3)
  • Runaway (Level 6)
  • Jester (Level 9)
  • Leper (Level 12)
  • Occultist (Level 15)

As those players that have experience with the original Darkest Dungeon are sure to notice, a number of the classes from that first entry in the series are absent from this new installment. Indeed, it is not currently possible to recruit heroes like the Crusader, Houndmaster, or Vestal; news that may be slightly disappointing to some fans. That said, this guide is being written during the early access period for Darkest Dungeon 2, and more characters are likely to appear before the game’s official release.

One last thing to mention is that fans can get information on what unlocks at the various Profile Levels by clicking on the number at the top of the aforementioned menu and using the onscreen arrows to scroll. These unlocks are certainly not limited to just heroes, though, as fans will also earn new Combat Items, Inn Items, Coach Upgrades, and much more through their continued progression. Gaining access to these additional items will undoubtedly prove helpful during future runs of this roguelite, providing even more incentive to earn Hope and level up.
