Red Hook Studios' brutal turn-based RPG Darkest Dungeon is often brought up as one key example of a Kickstarter success, as the acclaimed 2016 indie game has left its indelible mark on many fans of the roguelike genre. Those fans will be able to get their gothic fix again when its sequel Darkest Dungeon 2 releases in Early Access next year.

The developer released a teaser for the Epic Games Store-exclusive launch of Darkest Dungeon 2, first announced in February 2019, on Twitter today. It features a video flying through a 3D diorama of multiple characters battling off demonic entities, with a narrator encouraging players to rely on "battered souls" who always rise up from failure, rather than heroes as one might expect from stories and epic poems.

Darkest Dungeon rose to prominence on its conceit that the characters each player recruits are realistically defined by different vices or fears that come into play as the psychological stress of adventuring through the horrific world takes its toll. The sequel has no specific release date as of this writing, but its description on the Epic Games Store promises it will "test your mettle and drive you to the brink of madness."

This popular indie series has been in the news recently for more than just the sequel announcement on Twitter. A Darkest Dungeon board game adaptation is currently on Kickstarter, and its funding goal of $300,000 was met in less than an hour. Between these two ventures, fans of Darkest Dungeon can expect a lot more content to keep them horrified in the near future.
