The Dark Tower, the beloved-by-many magnum opus written by Stephen King, has been in various stages of becoming a motion picture project for quite some time, and it finally looks like he project might finally be getting off the ground soon. What better way to capitalize on the possible success of an epic film than to have a videogame stand alongside it?
Many fans of the book are no doubt cringing after hearing the news. Ain't It Cool News reports that, in addition to the film and television projects currently being developed for the over 3500 page series, a videogame will also be developed to be released in 2013.
"There's also a very ambitious Game component being planned that will further utilize elements from the books. [If everything continues on schedule and the budget is approved], it looks like things are coming together for a late-summer or early-September start."
That is a lot to consider, but there can't be a whole lot of doubt that Universal is going to make The Dark Tower come to life, especially as it could potentially make them a whole lot of money at the box office.
As to the proposed game, being someone who has read all seven novels and some of the comic, I can say that there is a huge wealth of story and world to work with. Bridging the film to a game is where things might turn a bit outlandish, in terms of creating mechanics that will satisfy gamers and (hopefully) fans of the series.
Being able to watch The Dark Tower on the big screen has been a dream for a lot of people, and with Javier Bardem offered the opportunity to play series protagonist Roland Deschain, and should he choose to take it, gravitas on the screen will be felt.
Ranters, would you be interested in playing a Dark Tower game? What other literary series would make for compelling game adaptations?
