The tremendous effect that Dark Souls has had on the gaming landscape over the past decade cannot be overstated. A game that spawned an entire genre (including its spirtual successor Elden Ring), this action roleplaying franchise has been widely praised both for its unique way of storytelling, as well as its beautiful, forlorn landscapes that served as the setting for a robust, exciting, and famously difficult gameplay loop. Partnering with Steamforged Games, FromSoftware now seeks to bring the setting of Lothric away from the computer screen and onto to the table top.

For those unfamiliar with the world of Dark Souls, it is a setting that spans millennia, with the passage of time between each entry of the franchise being long enough to completely change the geopolitical landscape of the world where the games take place in. It is a story about cycles, of kingdoms that rise and fall, of mortals that live and die – of the shortlived flame of existence against the constancy of time.

While one might spend hours arguing about the philosophy present in the lore of Dark Souls, the way that the setting handles its timeline (as well as the lore overall) allows for an almost boundless amount of freedom for dungeon masters to interpret the world for their tabletop campaigns, making Dark Souls an ideal franchise to adapt into a pen-and-paper roleplaying game. Given the teaser announcement on Twitter by the people at Steamforged Games, it is clear that they feel the same.

This is hardly the first foray for Steamforged Games when it comes to adapting a game franchise to a more physical medium, as it has earned its reputation by collaborating with the developers of Resident Evil and Horizon: Zero Dawn by creating board games inspired by the aforementioned games. It is no surprise that FromSoftware has chosen to partner with Steamforged Games once again, given that this isn't even the first Dark Souls project that the tabletop company has worked on in the past.

By delivering Dark Souls: The Board Game and Dark Souls: The Card Game to the tabletop audience, Steamforged Games and FromSoftware hope to further branch out the franchise by adding Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game to the mix. While the teaser and the announcement provided very few details about the roleplaying game – other than namedropping Dark Souls 3's setting of Lothric – players and tabletop fans will no doubt find out more in the near future.

Dark Souls is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
