According to the franchise's director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the Dark Souls series is done for now, with the third entry's Ringed City DLC marking the last piece of content to make its way into the series. Beyond the latest piece of expansion content, Miyazaki and his team at From Software currently have no plans for another numbered installment in the action-RPG franchise to start production any time soon.

This revelation comes from an upcoming interview between Miyazaki and the Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, which was covered by Japanese blog Esuteru, and translated by the Twitter user known as BlackKite. When Miyazaki was asked about the future of the Dark Souls series following the release of the Ringed City DLC for Dark Souls 3, the From Software president intimated that fans shouldn't expect another entry for the foreseeable future.

Although the Dark Souls series will remain a trilogy for the time being, Miyazaki expressed that he doesn’t believe that he managed to implement all he had envisioned to be in the Souls games, which echoes previous sentiments of his wherein he apologized for "incomplete aspects" in Dark Souls 3. With this being the case, while another installment is a long way off, such statements don't seem to completely rule out another sequel coming out sometime down the line.

Instead of the Dark Souls series having an immediate follow-up to the third entry, it seems as if Miyazaki and the crew at From Software have other projects in mind, as the game director said that he’s currently working on several titles that should be appealing to gamers. As it happens, Miyazaki has confirmed as much in the past by revealing that the studio has three new games in the works. However, details regarding their actual content are scant at this point.

Since it looks like the Dark Souls series will be on indefinite hiatus, fans are speculating exactly what kind of titles From Software will be cooking up next. Miyazaki has previously intimated that one of the games will be a completely new IP, but some fans have their fingers crossed for the developer to eventually put out a sequel to the 2015 PlayStation 4 exclusive Bloodborne. While it remains to be seen exactly what's in the works, it will be interesting to find out how the studio decides to flex its creative muscles with its forthcoming titles.

The Dark Souls series' latest entry is Dark Souls 3, which is available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
