It's hard to believe that the Dark Souls series has been around for nearly a decade. In that time, the franchise has influenced the gaming industry and community in ways that no one could have predicted. The term Soulslike was literally born from Dark Souls. However, one talented member of the modding community has created a mod for Dark Souls Remastered that takes the difficult nature of the game an extra step further.

The Dark Souls series was built on the foundation of high difficulty spikes and limited checkpoints. This format brought Dark Souls into the ranks of some of the hardest RPGs ever created. Though, more than that, Dark Souls inadvertently invented an entire subgenre of gaming called Soulslike RPGs.

Since the initial release of Dark Souls, many Soulslike games have started to pop up over the last decade. Games like Salt and Sanctuary and Hollow Knight that feature high difficulty and fewer checkpoints, but also bring a lot of unique qualities and mechanics to the table. Since then, there has been a wide range of experimentation happening within the world of gaming, both commercially and within the community.

This most recent mod for Dark Souls Remastered is a prime example of this. A talented modder by the name of Grimrukh has created a new mod for the game titled The Binding of Lordran. As the name of the mod implies, it borrows a lot of the same dungeon crawling, roguelike mechanics found in The Binding of Issac, as well as the widely popular Dead Cells.

Every time the player starts up the game, they will have to progress through levels with randomized enemy types in different locations. In addition, the player will also discover randomized loot, bosses, and other encounters. Though, what makes this mod so intimidating is the fact that if the player dies more than five times in a row, they'll be sent back to the very beginning of the game, just like any roguelike game.

This should give hardcore fans of Dark Souls the extra challenge they crave. Dark Souls fans have an active way of meeting the difficulty of the game head-on. For example, there was one tenacious player who beat Dark Souls using a homemade controller made out of bananas. In any case, hopefully, this mod will satisfy any and all fans of Dark Souls.

Dark Souls Remastered is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
