The latest and final DLC for Dark Souls 3, The Ringed City, gets a sinister announcement trailer, which reveals the forthcoming expansion's spring release date.

The Dark Souls series has always had a knack for building dread, while simultaneously stoking the flames of curiosity. This tradition continues with the trailer for Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City, the third installment's last piece of downloadable content, and possibly the final chapter in the entire series.

Bandai Namco Entertainment America released the trailer earlier today, along with a release date of March 28. The trailer creates a dark, foreboding atmosphere with stirring choral music and a narrator that describes a city found at the world's end. The Dark Souls 3 trailer also navigates through dilapidated, ruined landscapes filled with grotesque, hulking monstrosities.

The trailer flashes a few quick shots of new spells and weapons Ashen Ones will wield, and finishes by previewing a boss encounter with a gigantic, winged gargoyle wreathed in flame. It's horrific chaos, and everything fans have comes to expect from Dark Souls 3.

The finer details contained in the expansion are difficult to glean from the trailer, but the game's official site sheds a bit more light on what player's can expect.

At the close of the Age of Fire, as the world ends and all lands converge upon themselves, a lone adventurer descends into the madness of the earth and uncovers the secrets of the past. As players make their way to the fabled Ringed City they will encounter ancient beasts, a new cast of characters teetering on the edge of insanity, new armor, weapons, magic, and at the bottom of it all, a long lost city filled with new horrors for players to overcome.

The Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City DLC will set players back $14.99, unless they have a season pass. Those who invested early will receive the expansion when it launches.

The game's most recent DLC, Ashes of Ariandel, released three months ago and was an well-received by fans, which came as no surprise considering the popularity of the franchise. Dark Souls 3 has also been a hit with fans, and it was included in our list of the best RPGs of 2016.

With the announcement of the final DLC, the future of the series is murky at best. While the game's producer has shown interest in taking Dark Souls 3 to new places, such as virtual reality, there has been little to no talk of a sequel. Until a sequel is officially confirmed, fans will simply have to remain patiently optimistic, continue to celebrate the series, and enjoy the final, thrilling chapter of Dark Souls 3.

Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City will release on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on March 28, 2017.
