It’s been a year since the launch of Dark Souls 3, and finally the title has released its last piece of add-on content, The Ringed City. But while players might be eager to jump right into the game’s most comprehensive DLC, they might not know where to start.

In most Dark Souls games – those with DLC at least – getting to the new content isn’t as simple as a menu prompt. Developer From Software loves to make everything feel organic, and Dark Souls 3’s Ringed City is no different. But unlike the game’s first DLC, Ashes of Ariandel, which required that players talk to a very specific NPC in order to unlock the content, there are two ways to access the DLC.

1. Kiln of the First Flame Bonfire

The first way to unlock The Ringed City DLC is fairly straightforward. At the Kiln of the First Flame area, a second bonfire will appear next to the one that transports players into and out of the location.

It is not the bonfire that unlocks after beating the final boss in Dark Souls 3, Soul of Cinder, so players don’t actually have to complete the game to access the DLC. They will still have to get through some of its more difficult boss fights, though, as unlocking the Kiln of the First Flame requires beating the four main Lords of Cinder.

2. Ashes of Ariandel DLC Bonfire

The second route into The Ringed City DLC is via a bonfire in the Ashes of Ariandel DLC area. This bonfire appears after players beat the Sister Friede and Father Ariandel boss fight, easily one of the more challenging encounters in the entire game. It’s also important to note that players will need to talk to the painter in the Ashes of Ariandel DLC to unlock this bonfire, but most should have done that as part of their normal playthrough.

Although it might seem like The Ringed City will be an easier DLC given that players don’t need to beat Soul of Cinder, the recommended soul level for the new content is 120. So even if players haven’t made their way through Ashes of Ariandel, they might want to take some time to gain a few extra levels before embarking on Dark Souls 3’s final journey.

Then again, Dark Souls players love a challenge, so recommendations are likely to be laughed. We’re sure it won’t be long before someone beats the whole DLC without getting hit.

Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
