For players intending to play Dark Souls 3 with a focus on magic, Orbeck of Vinheim is an important ally to have on their side. Orbeck sells great beginner sorceries early on in the game, and as the game progresses, the spells available become stronger and better. The difficulty with Orbeck is that players must follow a specific set of rules to make sure the questline progresses smoothly, so they can buy his best spells. Orbeck can be found early on in the game and on top of selling magic, he can also help as a summon for certain boss fights, so definitely look out for him if possible.

Where To Find Him

Finding Orbeck of Vinheim in Road Of Sacrifices in Dark Souls 3
Orbeck can first be found in the Road Of Sacrifices in the early game. Near the Crucifixion Woods bonfire, Orbeck is studying texts in the ruins that lead to the Crystal Sage boss. Instead of going to the boss, if players go to the second floor, he will be there to talk and make a promise.
To start the questline properly, players just have to make a promise with him to share magic, and he will head to Firelink shrine. He will not go to Firelink if players have insufficient intelligence, which is any value under 10. To get around this, wear the Scholar Ring to get more intelligence.

The Promise

Orbeck essentially asks the player to find him scrolls scattered throughout the world to develop his knowledge of magic, and in turn he teaches the player character what he knows in the form of spells. This promise comes with special, unspoken conditions that players have to be wary of. RELATED: Dark Souls 3: 10 Rarest Rings(& Where To Find Them)
If the player defeats the Abyss Watchers boss without giving him a scroll, he will leave the game. This also applies if the player beats any other 4 bosses in a row without giving him a scroll at all. Only 1 scroll is needed to keep him in the game so be careful to find them and trade them as early as possible.

The Golden Scroll

Finding the Golden Scroll in Dark souls 3
The Golden Scroll is usually the first scroll given to Orbeck since it can be found early on in the game. This is the best scroll to give to Orbeck before continuing past the Abyss Watchers. To find the Golden Scroll, go to the Farron Keep bonfire and head through the swamp all the way through past the Wolf Gate.
Basilisks and skeleton monsters guard this area of the swamp, so dodge their attacks carefully. There's a large rock formation that can act as a landmark leading to the scroll if followed. At the end of the formation is a cave with bodies and chests strewn about. The Golden Scroll is in the hands of a corpse in the cave.

Do You Like Gimmicks?

When the player returns to Firelink after sending Orbeck there, it's possible to have a few different interactions with him. Firstly, players can now give him the Golden Scroll and ensure that he won't leave the game, which would stagnate his quest. RELATED: Dark Souls  3 : 10 Best Magic Weapons, Ranked
Secondly, players can buy all the sorceries he has in stock. After doing both of these things, he will thank the player and ask if they like gimmicks. The gimmicks he's talking about are the Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring and the Silent Ally gesture.

Sage's Scroll

Another scroll necessary to completing Orbeck's questline can be found in Farron Keep. To find the Sage's Scroll, go to the Keep Ruins bonfire towards the Wolf Gate like before. Once past the bridge, turn left so that the bridge is still in view and almost underneath the bridge. The area will look correct if players stay between the trees and find themselves surrounded by dead mushrooms. The scroll is on the corpse of one of those mushrooms.
When Orbeck is given the Sage's Scroll, he seems to imply that the scroll was written by Seath The Scaleless, a boss from the original Dark Souls. It has been clear since Dark Souls 2 that the various empires are connected by ash and flame, but this is the first time names and circumstances seem to transcend the cycle directly.

Logan's Scroll

Another reference to Dark Souls 1, this scroll can be found much later in the game than the other 2. To find Logan's scroll, head to the Profaned Capital bonfire and go to the bottom of the tower. Follow the broken wall on the left and head up the ramp. Eventually, the ramp turns into a wooden platform that players can follow until they reach a ladder on the wall of a church. Once on top of the wall of the church, players will have to battle an NPC enemy who is holding the scroll. The enemy wields multiple sorceries and can do a lot of damage with their large sword. Take them out carefully, then give the scroll to Orbeck.

Crystal Scroll

Traveling to the Grand Archives in Dark Souls 3
To obtain the Crystal Skull, players simply have to defeat the Crystal Sage in the Grand Archives. This boss can be found at the Grand Archives bonfire right at the entrance to the library itself. The boss is almost exactly the same as the original Crystal Sage from Farron Keep. It teleports around the library and evades attacks often so it can be somewhat furstrating to kill.
Once the Sage dies, the Crystal Skull will appear directly in the player's inventory and can be given to Orbeck. Orbeck claims to have been a member of the dragon school and all the scrolls gathered seem to be related to Seath the Scaleless so it's reasonable to think that his teachings survived multiple cycles of ash and flame.

Buy Everything He Has

Summoning Orbeck before the Prince boss fight in Dark souls 3
Once players give Orbeck all the scrolls and buys all his spells, he basically says he has nothing left to teach them, and that they would be hated if this were the academy he came from since they have mastered every sorcery known to the academy. He acknowledges the player as a friend and leaves Firelink, to start a new chapter of learning and discovery.
The player can find Orbeck as a summon in front of the Lothric Princes boss fight. To make sure his summon sign appears, players must also defeat the Curse-Rotted Greatwood, which can be done any time before this fight. This is the last major step in the questline of Orbeck.

How To Conclude His Questline

Finding Orbeck in the Grand Archives dead
In order to totally wrap up the story of Orbeck, players must visit his final resting place and claim his ashes. Orbeck can be found sitting at table in the Grand Archives after defeating the Princes of Lothric. Orbeck's final resting place is a poetic one, as he dies surrounded by the very passion that helped keep him alive.
The player has to navigate through enemies with candle heads to get to the body, but they don't pose too much of a threat when confronted up close. The question is did Orbeck let himself get killed by the candle heads, or did he succumb to the madness he felt knowing that he learned all the sorceries he could learn, and there was nothing left for him to do?

What To Do With The Ashes

What players can buy from Orbeck in Dark Souls 3
Orbeck's ashes can be used in two ways, depending on what the player wants to do with them. The first option is to give them to Yuria, the member of the Darkwraiths in Firelink Shrine. If players choose this, she will reward them with the Morion Blade. The Morion blade gets stronger when players have lower HP so it's an extremely unique weapon.
The other choice is to give the ashes to the Shrinemaiden, which allows players to buy any spell unlocked with a scroll. This is useful for players who don't buy everything from Orbeck before he leaves Firelink. this also unlocks the Clandestine coat, which is Orbeck's unique armor set.
