9 Way Of Blue

Perfect Starting Covenant For PvE

Dark Souls 3 Way of Blue (NPC)
  • Automatically summons Blue Sentinels and Blades of the Darkmoon when invaded
  • Cannot be used against invaders of Aldrich Faithful, Anor Londo, or Watchdogs of Farron invaders in their respective defense areas

Way of Blue is an entry covenant that is very hard to miss. Players will pick this one up fairly early into their journey, and its sole objective is to provide players with protection from more experienced players who will act as bodyguards, but not against PvE players, but those PvP-hungry fiends who seek the demise of the host’s world. As part of this ancient accord with the Way of Blue, players call to aid those who want to root out evil.

How to Join

Across from the Vordt of the Boreal Valley Bonfire, players can journey into the Cathedral and talk to Emma, High Priestess of Lothric Castle. By talking to this character, they will receive a Small Lothric Banner. Talking to this character to exhaust her dialogue, they will receive the Way of Blue crest, which allows them to equip the Way of Blue covenant. Be warned, attacking and killing Emma has dire consequences, and will start the Dancer of the Boreal Valley boss fight, but they can still get the Way of Blue covenant crest from her corpse.

8 Watchdogs of Farron

Defensive PvP Covenant

Dark Souls 3 Watchdogs of Farron (Old Wolf)
  • Automatically summoned as an invader to protect Farron Keep
  • Blue phantom invasion appearance
  • Receive Wolf’s Blood Swordgrass by defeating other players

To be a Watchdog of Farron, one must prioritize Farron Keep, and uphold this poisonous swamp, and infested land, above all else. Those who trespass into Farron Keep will be met with invaders, there to snuff out any life that may interrupt the sleeping serenity of Farron Keep’s warriors and Old Wolf of Farron. Watchdogs of Farron are more of a gimmick Covenant, as their area of protection is fairly small, and limited to protection in the areas of the Abyss Watchers and the Crystal Sage, which are surrounded by poison swamps.

How to Join

Before killing the Abyss Watchers, players need to head to the Road of Sacrifices area and use the Keep Ruins Bonfire. From here, head down the path leading to the large doors, but take a right instead until they find a ladder by the castle wall. Going up this ladder, players will find a new Bonfire, as well as Old Wolf Farron, to which they can pray, and receive the Watchdogs of Farron emblem. Equip it, and become one with the covenant.

7 Blue Sentinels

Defend Those in Way of Blue

emma at a bonfire
  • Automatically summoned to Way of Blue covenant members who have been invaded
  • Blue phantom color when summoned
  • Cannot help with boss fights
  • Guide a Way of Blue host to the boss room to receive Proof of a Concord Kept
  • Kill invaders as a Blue Sentinel protecting Way of Blue hosts to receive Proof of a Concord Kept

The Blue Sentinels work together with the Way of Blue, acting as their more experienced guardians. As a Blue Sentinel, players are tasked with protecting the Way of Blue by warding off dark spirits and killing any invaders that may cause harm to the host. Summons happen automatically, but long wait times may spell disaster for the host, and the fact that Blue Sentinels are powerless to help during boss fights, leaves much to be desired unless the player just enjoys countering PvP.

How to Join

Upon reaching the Halfway Fortress Bonfire at the Road of Sacrifices, players will meet Anri of Astora and Horace the Hushed. Speak to these characters, and exhaust their dialogue, to receive the Blue Sentinels item. This crest, once equipped in the covenant slot, will allow players to represent the Blue Sentinels covenant.

To obtain rank rewards, players need to talk to Company Captain Yorshka, who can be found by using the Anor Londo Bonfire to take to the spinning tower elevator. Take the elevator down, and then from the top, face Anor Londo and walk off the ledge of the walkway to follow an invisible path to reach a tower in the distance.

Lesser Blue Sentinels

Dark Souls 3 Blades of the Darkmoon (Yorshka)
  • Dark blue phantom when summoned
  • Rivals to the Aldrich Faithful
  • Only summoned to those invading with a Red Eye Orb
  • Cannot be summoned against Aldrich Faithful or Watchdogs of Farron
  • Obtain Proof of a Concord Kept when killing invaders threatening Way of Blue members

Whilst interesting in a lore sense, the Blades of the Darkmoon are pretty useless. There is a nobility within this covenant, and one that seeks the decimation of dark spirits, and those that invade the helpless and innocent. Blades of the Darkmoon seek out evils and will be tasked with protecting Way of Blue covenant members, alongside their allies the Blue Sentinels, who also have the same goal.

Dark Souls 3 Spears of the Church (Halflight)
  • Summoned to replace Halflight, Spear of the Church boss fight
  • Defeating players(host or phantoms) grants Filianore’s Spear Ornament
  • The Ringed City DLC Covenant

Much like the Old Monk boss fight from Demon’s Souls, players can become the boss fight against other players and take the role of a loyal spirit, summoned by the Judicator to destroy any and all Disturbers of Sleep that may threaten to wake Princess Filianore. As a Spear of the Church, the player must protect this slumbering kingdom against trespassers and threats.

How to Join

Players need to defeat Darkeater Midir in The Ringed City DLC to receive the Spears of the Church covenant badge. To find Darkeater Midir, follow these steps:

  • At the Shared Grave Bonfire, players will need to fight Darkeater Midir on the Church of Filianore bridge until his health reaches 0%, to which he will fall into the chasm below.
  • Take the shortcut path from the Ringed Inner Wall Bonfire, located behind a metal gate behind the bonfire.
  • Head to the elevator and face the wall where players can see the elevator lever. Take the elevator down, and keep rolling at the left wall until they manage to slip into the secret doorway halfway down the elevator.
  • Head left in this secret room to find a room filled with Silver Knight statues. Hit the right corner statue to reveal an illusionary wall.
  • Take the ladder down and head past the altar, dropping into Darkeater Midir’s boss room.
  • To earn rewards from this covenant, head to the Divine Spear Monument in the Ringed City, which can be found right before the Halflight, Spear of the Church boss fight room.

4 Rosaria’s Fingers

PvP Focused Covenant

Dark Souls 3 Rosaria’s Fingers (Rosaria)
  • Trade Pale Tongues for reallocated stats and appearance changes
  • Defeat hosts for Forked Pale Tongues
  • Defeat Blue Sentinels/Blade of the Darkmoon members for Forked Pale Tongues

Rosaria’s Fingers is a despicable covenant for despicable players. The sole objective of this covenant is to invade and destroy, killing all hosts and allied players with the host to provide the mistress Rosaria with the removed tongue of fallen victims. It’s brutal, and pledging to Rosaria’s Fingers means that players have an act for the sinister, and enjoy PvP to comfort their voiceless goddess.

How to Join

The steps listed below will help those with the Cathedral of the Deep shortcut find Rosaria's covenant:

  • From the Cathedral of the Deep Bonfire, face the altar, head left, and take a left again to access the elevator that will take players up the tower.
  • Through the archway, take a left and follow the path to take the ladder even further up.
  • Run forward and walk off of the wooden planks to land on a tiled floor, to which players need to follow the path and take an immediate right into the first available archway.
  • Once inside, players will need to walk along the platform to the left, and then to the right, rolling down below to the stone platform with candles.
  • Follow the path past the slug enemies, and take a right to open the large closed doors to find Rosaria’s Bed Chamber Bonfire. Speak to Rosaria and claim the Rosaria’s Fingers crest.

3 Mound-Maker

The Mad Phantoms

Dark Souls 3 Mound-Maker (Sacrificial Altar)
  • PvP/PvE covenant
  • Can be summoned through White Sign Soapstone or Red Eye Orb, always able to attack the host and other phantoms
  • Given the appearance of a purple phantom
  • Mound-Maker invaders are prioritized worlds with more than one player
  • Rewarded Vertebra Shackle upon killing the host

This covenant is shackled by the Gods, and players can equip this covenant item to join the Mad Phantoms and unleash utter chaos into this dying world. Led by Holy Knight Hodrick, the goal of the Mound-Makers is simple: kill all and add to their mounds. Whether that’s through killing enemies, invaders, hosts, or co-operators, in the eyes of the Mound-Makers, killing provides yet another shackle, and another divine property to be proud of.

These loyal spirits are summoned to Anor Londo to defend their master against those who seek to destroy this Lord of Cinder, adding extra challenge to this already compelling and hard-navigating area in the ruins of the former renowned Anor Londo.

How to Join

From the Pontiff Sulyvahn Bonfire, head through the large doors to the left up the stairs. Take an immediate run to the cathedral ahead, and then before proceeding up the stairs found inside this building, go to the left of them and hit the wall to reveal a hidden area. 1 Warrior Of Sunlight

Praise The Sun Covenant

Dark Souls 3 Warrior of Sunlight member
  • Summon Sign is now gold
  • Receive a Sunlight Medal (along with the host) for defeating a boss
  • Praise the Sun emote for a summon animation

Becoming a Warrior of Sunlight is no easy task, and those who are devoted enough to enter this journey will be blessed with the power and brilliance of the sun. To those who are a Warrior of Sunlight, jolly cooperation is the primary focus, and they will follow the ways of their classic leader of old, Solaire of Astoria by placing down their Summon Sign, which will in turn make them a golden apparition within the world that they are helping. The core goal of a Warrior of Sunlight is to aid other players, with the ultimate goal of defeating bosses, and invaders, and guiding those through to safety.

How To Join

From the Undead Settlement Bonfire, head past the burning tree through a corpse-house on the left, to which players will need to jump down a hole in the floor past boxes and caged enemies. Nearest to the pot of Estus Soup, players will find the Warrior of Sunlight item. Equipping this emblem into the Covenant slot will make players join the Warriors of Sunlight.

To enhance rewards from the Warriors of Sunlight covenant, players need to head to the Sunlight Altar located in Lothric Castle. The easiest way to get here is to defeat the Dragonslayer Armour boss, and from the bonfire, turn around head through the archway, and take the route to the right to find a ladder. Climb this ladder, take an immediate right across the rooftops, down the other ladder (past the three guards), to find a walkway with a powerful knight, who protects the Sunlight Altar.
