Developer Supermassive Games has found a reliable formula for creating horror games, which it has used to deliver titles like Until Dawn and the Dark Pictures Anthology. The latter has seen two entries released in the last few years, though it appears that the developer is now teasing more information for House of Ashes, the third entry in the series.

Over on Twitter, the official Dark Pictures account released an image showing the interior of a cave, some sort of statue taking up the right-hand side. In the center, a carved staircase slopes up towards a hole in the wall, which radiates light. It's difficult to discern, but it appears that sand is moving into the cave from the exterior. Along with the image, the tweet reads "you’ve been kept in the dark long enough."

The implication here is that Supermassive Games will soon be shedding more light on the project, which has seen relatively little information released about it. So far, House of Ashes has received a trailer and a few supporting details, with the game taking players to Iraq in 2003. There, they'll be put into the role of a Military Unit accompanied by a CIA agent dispatched to investigate an underground chemical weapons facility. Obviously, though, more sinister things await.

A quote-tweet from the official Supermassive Twitter account essentially confirms that more information is one the way, though it doesn't specify when. E3 is next month, though, and considering how much effort the show is putting into its comeback this year, it seems likely that House of Ashes will appear there in some capacity, regardless of whether or not more information is released between now and then.

On a surface level, the screenshot accompanying the tweet doesn't give much away as far as new details are concerned. There's always the possibility of hidden details, though, and the statue seems like an oddly specific element to include. It wouldn't be surprising for the image's significance to be revealed during whatever information dump happens next, assuming fans don't discover something else about it in the meantime.

Currently, House of Ashes is slated to release in 2021, though no solid release date has been given It would make sense for the game to release in October, as that would land it in the same Halloween window that Little Hope, the last entry, hit. Plus, there's not a lot slated for October at the moment, and horror fans will likely have gotten over Resident Evil Village by then.

The Dark Pictures: House of Ashes is in development.
