While there’s quite a bit about the PlayStation 5 that Sony has revealed already, a lot of key information remains a mystery, like how much the console will cost and when exactly it will release. Many across the gaming community have tried to make their best guesses for both of these, but when it comes to cost, this latest example begins to strain the limits of believability.

The last Sony said on the subject back in February, it confirmed that a price hadn’t been set for the console, with CFO Hiroki Totoki telling investors that the PS5's final cost will depend on a number of factors, including the price of its biggest competitor, the Xbox Series X. Despite the lack of an official price, it’s been discovered that the console is already available for pre-order on Danish retailer føtex’s website.

That in itself would be strange, but the most absurd part is that the PS5 is currently listed there for 6,989 Danish krone, or around $1,043/£837. That’s nearly three times the cost of the PS4 at launch ($399/£349), and more than double the $450-$499 range that most agree is as high as the next-gen consoles can get before consumers are turned off by the price. In short, it’s ridiculously expensive.

It’s likely that this is just a placeholder price until the official one comes along, but it’s also possible that this is føtex preparing for a worst-case scenario for the coronavirus pandemic. With all of the things being shut down in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19, there have been growing concerns that if the PS5 isn’t delayed because of it, it will suffer from a shortage of supplies that will lead to a shortage of consoles, which could conceivably push the price up considerably.

PS5 may load games as easy as netflix loads movies

While the price in føtex’s listing is hard to take at face value, however, the release date is much more believable. It is currently listed as December 1, 2020, and although that could also be a placeholder, it does still fall within the PS5’s confirmed “holiday 2020” release window. This would put the console’s launch behind the latest rumored launch date for the Xbox Series X, but not by much.

Whether either console launches in time for the holidays remains to be seen. As of mid-March, Sony has said that the PS5 has not yet been delayed because of coronavirus, but with the situation continuing to develop around the world, it’s hard to say if the company will be able to stick with its original plans. Only time will tell.

The PlayStation 5 is still slated for a holiday 2020 launch.
