Despite a unique year in history for the movie industry, the list of Hollywood best-paid actors is looking quite familiar, however, there is some novelty as Dwayne Johnson stepped aside for Daniel Craig to rise to the very top.

Although the people mentioned on these lists have not changed dramatically for nearly half a decade, the names of the companies handing out those massive checks are vastly different with streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video willing to shell out huge amounts of money to secure the most recognizable talent out there. On top of that, an ailing box office that is still yet to recover from the pandemic means actors can no longer rely on performance-related bonuses to make up the biggest chunk of their salaries.

A recent article published by Variety crunched the numbers to find out Daniel Craig became the top earner due to Netflix securing his appearance in both Knives Out 2 and its sequel for $100m, a sum that includes Netflix buyout payment related to the movies’ performance. This trend is seen almost among the entire list with Dwayne Johnson taking a similar $50m deal for Amazon’s Red One, just like Will Smith (King Richard $40m), Denzel Washington (The Little Things $40m), and Leonardo DiCaprio (Don’t Look Up $30m).

Jennifer Lawrence and Tom Cruise Top Gun

As for the women, the first one to show up in seventh place is DiCaprio’s Don’t Look Up co-star Jennifer Lawrence, who takes home a similar $25m bag, followed by Julia Roberts (Leave the World Behind $25m) and Sandra Bullock (The Lost City of D $20m). While this type of contract is a necessity for straight-to-streaming movies, it also helps protect actors from the kind of issues that led Scarlett Johansson suing Disney over Black Widow’s earnings.

So, is everyone in Hollywood jumping over to streaming and fixed predefined paychecks? Not quite, since superheroes Chris Hemsworth and Robert Pattinson’s salaries don’t yet account for additional performance-derived income from Thor: Love and Thunder and The Batman. Tom Cruise is yet another example of someone who’s sticking with the standard of old as his high $13m base pay for Top Gun: Maverick, plus a share of box office income, might partly explain why the movie has been delayed for so long.

It’s not surprising to see that the way movie stars earn their wealth has changed on par with the way audiences consume the content they work on, nevertheless, until movie theaters get fully back to normal it will be hard to make a definitive call on how and for whom actors would rather ply their trade.
