The lands of Skyrim are teeming with wildlife. While some of these creatures, like deer and foxes, are peaceful, many of these creatures are hostile. Skyrim is a harsh land, and survival is a struggle; thus, many of Skyrim's animals have adapted to be incredibly dangerous.

As the Dragonborn journeys through Skyrim, players will inevitably encounter a number of these menacing beasts, some of which number among the game's most powerful enemies. Whether they stalk Skyrim's forests, wander its plains, or lurk in caves deep beneath the surface, players should be aware of the many dangers they'll likely face over the course of their adventure. In Skyrim, knowledge can be a lifesaver.

10 Frostbite Spider

Skyrim frostbite spider

These creatures are among the first enemies players face in Skyrim, as they inhabit the caves beneath Helgen. The frostbite spiders in Helgen are easy enough to defeat, as are most of those encountered throughout Skyrim's wilderness and in the many dungeons players explore.

However, frostbite spiders can grow to be huge, and these rare variants can be quite tough to defeat. They have a large pool of health, they can shoot a devastating poison from afar, and their attacks have the potential to deal immense amounts of damage.

9 Bear

Players will encounter numerous bears on their adventure, typically in the wilds or in caves. All variants of bears can be tough foes, especially at low levels, with the toughest of all being snow bears.

An encounter with a snow bear can often prove deadly, and they can be difficult to take down. They have a large amount of health and boast a 50% resistance to frost. Fortunately, this particular type of bear is only encountered in the snowy regions of the north - take care when traveling in these areas!

8 Slaughterfish

These fish are not particularly powerful, but they can be a nuisance - and a danger - to players diving and swimming. They swim much faster than the player, and will follow them through the water, often in groups.

While swimming, players are unable to use their weapons and magic, so a slaughterfish assault can be deadly. If the water is not escaped in time, players will have their health slowly nibbled away by slaughterfish with no way of fighting back.

7 Sabre Cat

Skyrim sabre cat

Sabre cats are a common animal found throughout Skyrim, and getting too close to one can often be lethal. While they are not as tough as bears, they are much faster, and deal a high amount of damage at rapid speeds. It is also difficult to outrun a sabre cat.

Furthermore, sabre cats are both aggressive and move with very little noise. If they spot the player before the player sees them, death will likely be swift. There is little chance to outrun a sabre cat once it has spotted its prey.

6 Bristleback

Skyrim bristleback

These large boars make their home on Solstheim, and were included in the Dragonborn DLC. They aggressively defend their territory with their sharp tusks, and are sometimes used by Rieklings as deadly mounts.

Watch out for their charge attacks, for they are fast and can do devastating amounts of damage to a poorly-armored Dragonborn. Their Riekling riders can also throw javelins at the player, making bristlebacks deadly even at a distance. A shield would be an effective tool to use in a bristleback encounter, as it would absorb the damage from any spears and charges.

5 Netch

Skyrim netch

Netch are an unusual creature, quite unlike those commonly found in Skyrim. They are native to Morrowind, but Skyrim players can encounter them in the southern regions of Solstheim. Netch can sometimes have over 1000 points of health, and they inflict high amounts of shock damage against players who get too close.

Fortunately, netch are passive creatures that will not attack unprovoked. However, players may have reason to fight them, either to acquire their jelly to make paralysis poisons or as part of the Creation Club quest Put A Fork In It.

4 Horker

Skyrim two horkers

On land, horkers are not particularly dangerous. They are slow and deal only moderate amounts of damage. However, a horker in water can be a different matter entirely. They are fast swimmers, and if they catch players while swimming - thus unable to fight back - they can be deadly.

There is a unique horker on Solstheim known as Lord Tusk, and he is much larger and more powerful. He in particular is not to be underestimated, but care should also be taken against regular horkers at lower levels.

3 Nix-Hound

Skyrim two nix-hounds

Nix-Hounds are strange creatures, and an introduction to Solstheim from the Dunmer homeland. They are found in the ashy southern regions of Solstheim. They are aggressive and often attack in groups, so although one nix-hound may not be a particularly fearsome foe, an ambush by several can be lethal, as their attacks are swift.

A nix-hound can be acquired as a pet in Anniversary Edition from Revus Sarvani near Tel Mithryn. It will not fight for the player, but can be a useful pack mule.

2 Chaurus

Skyrim chaurus

Players will typically encounter chaurus deep underground, often accompanied (and domesticated) by Falmer. They frequently spit a powerful poison that does rapid damage, unimpeded by the player's armor rating, and they can also inflict poison with their melee attacks.

Chaurus are strong too, boasting high amounts of health and armor. Even more powerful are chaurus hunters, their metamorphosed forms, which can burst from cocoons and poison players before they have any time to respond. In some of the darkest, deepest dungeons around Skyrim, players may even encounter immense, boss-level chaurus.

1 Mammoth

Skyrim mammoth

One of the toughest animals players will encounter in Skyrim can be found wandering the tundra of Whiterun, Eastmarch, and the Pale. Mammoths deal huge amounts of damage, capable of killing players in one or two hits, and have over 900 points of health which they regenerate a portion of when they are close to death.

Furthermore, mammoths are often encountered in herds, so fighting one on its own is unlikely. They may also be protected by giants, making encounters with them even more deadly!
