Danganronpa, the quirky Japanese murder mystery/visual novel series about ultra-talented high school students forced to kill each other in a deadly game, released its first title in 2010 for the PlayStation Portable. Unfortunately, its planned 10th anniversary celebration in 2020 was limited in scope due to difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, developer Spike Chunsoft has announced that some of the planned Danganronpa-themed events will be moving forward in 2021, including the re-release of at least one title.

The Danganronpa series consists of three main games, a spin-off entitled Ultra Despair Girls, and a number of side materials including anime, light novels, and a VR demo. The third game, entitled Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, was released in 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita. Series creator Kazutaka Kodaka indicated that it would be the final game in the series, as he wished to move on to other projects, which so far have included horror FMV game Death Come True and upcoming mystery World's End Club.

A re-release of Danganronpa V3 : Killing Harmony for Android and iOS mobile devices was announced as part of the delayed tenth anniversary celebration. This follows the anniversary mobile releases of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Super Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair in May and September 2020 respectively. Like the previous smartphone versions, the V3 re-release will be subtitled Anniversary Edition and will feature an updated UI as well as an expanded gallery featuring additional screenshots and in-game movies. It will cost $15.99 and will include both English and Japanese audio options.

Killing Harmony moved the Danganronpa series away from its previous setting of Hope's Peak Academy and introduced the Academy for Gifted Juveniles, a new high school for talented teenagers. An all-new cast of 16 students face off in a dangerous game hosted by recurring series mascot Monokuma, in which they must kill one another in order to be allowed to "graduate" high school. It introduced the "Lie" function, in which the player character can lie in trials in order to make their case, as well as new mini games including Psyche Taxi, Mind Mine, and Argument Armament.

Currently, Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony is available to purchase on PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita. An official release date for the smartphone version has not yet been announced.
