Quirky murder mystery series Danganronpa (which roughly translates to "Bullet Rebuttal") is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2021. Although the first game initially released in 2010 for the PlayStation Portable, official anniversary celebrations were delayed until 2021 due to complications resulting from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Since its inception, the Danganronpa series, which revolves around talented "Ultimate" high school students being forced to kill each other as part of a deadly game, has spawned three main series titles, one spinoff game, and multiple animated TV series, manga, and light novels.

Announced for the Nintendo Switch as part of the game's tenth anniversary celebration, Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp is the fifth overall game and second spinoff title in the series. It deviates from the franchise's traditional murder mystery visual novel gameplay, and instead features characters from throughout the series interacting in a tropical setting. Players will be able to select characters from all four previous Danganronpa titles and strengthen them via a board game style mode that also triggers social interactions with other students. Then, these characters will be able to challenge a tower-style dungeon featuring monsters inspired by recurring series mascot Monokuma.

A recent blog post by developer Spike Chunsoft revealed that Danganronpa S will feature optional microtransactions using real-world currency. Players will be able to use money to purchase Monocoins, an in-game currency that is then used to access a series of gacha called "MonoMono Machines," via which common, rare, and ultra-rare versions of characters can be obtained. The game will feature three MonoMono Machines, each focusing on different character rarities. Rare character cards will feature brand-new art of the characters wearing swimsuits.

In its post, Spike Chunsoft officially confirmed that these microtransactions will be optional. Spike Chunsoft's statement reads: "All content such as characters, character upgrade cards, and items can be unlocked by playing the game. All characters and character upgrade cards can also be purchased through the MonoMono Machines at the School Store with real-world money." Spike Chunsoft did not confirm at this time how much real-world money different Monocoin bundles and amounts will cost.

In addition to a solo release for the Nintendo Switch, Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp will be available as part of a four-game bundle entitled Danganronpa Decadence, which also contains Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, Super Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, and New Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony. The bundle is slated to cost $60. A collector's edition, which is currently selling for $100, includes a poster, a set of prints, a soundtrack CD, and a metal storage case featuring Monokuma.

Danganronpa S' combination board game and RPG dungeon style gameplay was first introduced in New Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, which saw a mobile port earlier in 2021, in the form of a post-game mode titled "Ultimate Talent Development Plan." The original version of this mode did not feature the option to purchase gacha coins with real-world money. Currently, Spike Chunsoft has not confirmed whether real-world purchase options will feature in the Decadence version of this mode or whether they will be exclusive to S.

Both Danganronpa Decadence and Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp will release for the Nintendo Switch on December 3rd, 2021.
